I was curious about the cost of my Kickstarter addiction so I added up the numbers and it's actually quite a bit higher than I thought.

Here's some numbers.

Total - $828
Total on Board Games - $779

I'm currently backing Tuscany. That one funded on the first day, but I didn't include it in the totals as I haven't spent that money yet.

So, how much have you spent on Kickstarter?

+1 to this, I'm actually hesitant to add it up

Edit: Damn you OP and your questions!! My curiosity go the better of me

Total - $2,351 (will go up some due to add ons in two current campaigns I'm in)

Board games - 2,086
Gaming accessories, etc. - 250
Non gaming items - 15

KS items sold for more than what I paid, 1 item. Paid $100 sold for $160

So I guess grand total (currently) after sale is $2,191...

Not much.
But how many KS have I backed and pulled out of on the last day because it didn't turn out how I wanted it to? Probably the last 6 KS that I backed. I think I've cancelled more pledges than I've actually committed to.

Total - $1763
Board games - $1125
Almost board games - $250 (Dice Tower + Reaper Bones)

Regrettable Board Game Selections - $266 out of $1125. That's not as bad as I thought. Of course there are still $317 of those board game projects to deliver so I could still come to regret them.

I'm at $136 of regrettable purchases and $500 of yet to be delivered. Most of that is my Small World Designer edition though, and there is no way I'm going to end up regretting that one.

Total?

Moongha Invaders: Mad Scientists and Atomic Monsters Attack the Earth! - Think I spent somewhere north of $65. Ordered in November 2012....It's 2014 and still no game. Yay.

And Fief: France 1429 - Spent about $70. Should be seeing that by June...I hope.

So $135.

$15 on Draco Magi. It's the only one I've seen where it seemed just as worthwhile to get in early as opposed to just picking it up from retailers later.

I'd definitely consider backing more, though, if a company were to put on as good of campaign as Mr. Burke did.

I'm still waiting on this one as well. I was super excited for the game a year ago but my interesting is waning. I'm sure it's still coming, but I just can't make myself get excited for it anymore.

How many games is that? I ask because I've spent at least that much on board games in the recent past... of course that's probably the amount I would have spent on 20 to 26 games or so... I'm curious what that kind of money gets you on Kickstarter.

For the record, I've spent zero on kickstarter.

$196 on board games
$10 on video games
$75 on non-game stuff

I'm okay with this and intend to continue investing in good looking games

Looks like 17 games. My numbers may be a little skewed though. I have almost $400 in one game and then a couple microgames.

I think I've learned that unless Kickstarter games come with some super sweet exclusives, it's just not worth it. It's almost always cheaper to wait for retail, and then you get the added bonus of reviews that will help avoid some duds.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

I have spent $1,746 on KS, and I haven't even been on there a year.
An additional $189 has been pledged(Tuscany), but not collected yet.
$115 of that was non game related.

I have slowed down a lot lately though….

oh boy. Lots. Here's my summary, if you're curious.

Nearly $4,000 on 31 boardgames or related projects, and a few hundred maybe on non-boardgame projects (books, music mostly)

Oh, and regrets? Five, about 10% of money spent ($485): D Day Dice, Moby Dick Card Game, Hell Dorado expansion, Stalingrad (Tides of Iron expansion), and sort of Kaosball. The latter game hasn't come yet, but I've gotten serious buyer's remorse for it... Too many games, and this one will not likely hit the table, or get used for its most interesting purpose: team evolution over a season.

Total - $175
Total on Board Games - $75 - but I actually MADE MONEY out of kickstarer boardgames

My only boardgame kickstarter was Dungeon Roll - I ordered 6 copies shipped to US for $75. I was very lucky to get those copies 3 days before I was travelling back to Poland. I took the games with me and sold them in Poland. Now, the worldwide shipping was 2-3 weeks later so at that time I was the only person in Poland to have these games.

I sold 5 copies, three for $30 each and two for $25 each, netting me $135. So I was +$60 overall and still have one copy of Dunegon Roll for me.

Certainly a reasonable perspective, but from what I've seen, the overwhelming majority of KS boardgame projects do not "fail" (i.e., become "vaporware").

Unfortunately, KS doesn't provide very granular data, but over 3,000 games have been successfully funded (this includes video games, I'm not sure what the proportion of this 3K is video but surely it's a lot!) and I'm aware of two boardgames that totally failed (Doom that came to atlantic city, Odin's Ravens), and the former example got picked up by another company and it looks like it will get eventually published (still counts as a "FAIL" in my book, as the project director completely capitulated).

Quite a few (In my experience, about 60%) miss their expected delivery dates, some by a lot (OGRE took 12 months, Up Front is looking to surpass that).

And many games just haven't been as good as they looked on the KS project page (the most compelling reason to not back any KS projects!). I'm not very risk-averse in terms of backing "cool looking" projects, but I totally understand why folks wouldn't be keen on that perspective.

Edit: D'oh! Make that three "FAILS" if you include the epic adventure that is the Katalyka campaign!
