Essentially if you have multiple sets of characters. We run with three sets; the base, the official expansion, and Storm Knight's custom characters posted here: http://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/50822/shadow-hunters-custo...
After you deal out the identity to everyone, shuffle the remainder of all the characters in play and deal out an additional card. On this new card, you only get the power, not the win condition, health or affiliation. In respects to Daniel and Brian, which only have negative powers you are allowed to toss them out and draw a new one. In respects to Evan from the custom characters set, your love is still the first revealed shadow (not shadow power), even if it's you.
To use the secondary power you just need to reveal that power, not your full identity. We also modified two cards, the faction full heal cards, Diabolic Ritual and Advent. They have the text "or any character may swap their secondary power with another character, or with a random one from the remaining powers pile." Any single use power is recharged upon swapping, although powers voided by Chain of forbidden curse is still voided. Chain of forbidden curse only affects the one power, not both powers of the player.

This variant can occasionally make some lopsided games, but after playing for almost a year with this variant, for the most part it is still fairly balanced. Some nasty combo's obviously are Charles\Vampire, (Charles|Werewolf)\Allie, Vampire\Werewolf, or the really ugly, (Daniel|Catherine)\Charles, which can possibly win on their first turn.
