One of my undergraduate political science students this term decided to try to design a board game of the 2011 "Arab Spring" as a project. For those who might be interested, you can follow her design and playtesting experiences at PAXsims:

Gaming the Arab Spring: Part 1

Gaming the Arab Spring: Part 2

Gaming the Arab Spring: Part 3

Gaming the Arab Spring: A First Playtest

Gaming the Arab Spring: More Playtesting

It is shaping up to be a very good game!

Are the UAE missing from the map? The Sudan outline may need an update too...

Otherwise, great idea!

Thanks for the comments! I'll pass them (and any others) on to the student (Corinne Goldberger).

Not all of the countries are playable, partly for practical reasons (too much playable space, too hard to fit on map), but mainly for political reasons: they were either never seriously challenged during the Arab Spring (such as UAE or Qatar) or their political dynamics were driven by things other than "Arab Spring effects" in 2011 (such as Lebanon, Palestine, Kuwait and Iraq). They are depicted as faint outlines in the background.

The Republic of South Sudan didn't become a country until July 2011, and the game starts in November 2010, hence the borders used for Sudan.
