I have three questions that will be followed with examples to hopefully clear up some issues that the example in the rulebook does not resolve. Hopefully Mr. Alan Moon or someone "in the know" can provide us with an official answer to these questions. All examples will use 4 players. The 4 player bonus chart is as follows:

1st - 55 points
2nd - 35 points
3rd - 20 points
4th - 0 points

Question #1: Does tying for a place remove the next bonus down, or remove from the bottom bonus up?

Example: At game end Players A & B have 4 tokens each. Player C has 2, and Player D has 1. What is the final scoring?

Is it:
Player A - 55 points (tied for first)
Player B - 55 points (tied for first)
Player C - 35 points (has the second largest amount, so gets 2nd)
Player D - 20 points (has the third largest amount, so gets 3rd)

or is it:
Player A - 55 points (tied for first)
Player B - 55 points (tied for first)
Player C - 20 points (2 players have more tokens, so takes 3rd)
Player D - 0 points (3 players have more tokens, so takes 4th)

Question #2: Does taking a loan remove you from being considered for points at all, or do you still take a spot in the bonus scoring based on your token count, and just get 0 points?

Example: At game end, Player A has 4 tokens, Player B has 3 tokens AND a loan, Player C has 2 tokens, and Player D has 1 token. What is the final scoring?

Is it:
Player A - 55 points (most tokens)
Player B - 35 0 points (2nd most tokens but has a loan)
Player C - 20 points (3rd most tokens)
Player D - 0 points (4th most tokens)

or is it:
Player A - 55 points (most tokens amongst those without loans)
Player C - 35 points (2nd most tokens amongst those without a loan)
Player D - 20 points (3rd most tokens amongst those without a loan)
Player B - 0 points (has loan, # of tokens no longer considered)

Question #3: Can you score a bonus with 0 tokens?

Example: At game end Player A has 4 tokens, Player B has 3 tokens, and Players C & D have 0 tokens each. What will the final scoring be?

Is it:
Player A - 55 points (most tokens)
Player B - 35 points (2nd most tokens)
Player C - 20 points (ties for 3rd most, even though has none)
Player D - 20 points (ties for 3rd most, even though has none)

or is it:
Player A - 55 points (most tokens)
Player B - 35 points (2nd most tokens)
Player C - 0 points (has no tokens so cannot score bonus)
Player D - 0 points (has no tokens so cannot score bonus)

If players with 0 tokens are allowed to get bonus points, than a single player with 0 may still be able to earn points if players with loans are removed from the bonus scoring completely.

Unfortunately, the rulebook example is confusing because it doesn't clarify why the players got what they got. In the rulebook it's:

Kirsten (9 tokens) - 55 points
Jasper (9 tokens) - 55 points
Julia (3 tokens and loan) - 0 points
Niels (1 token) 20 points

Now does Niels get 20 points because 2 players have more tokens than him that don't have loans (two players tied take up 1st and 2nd spot, and loan tokens not considered)?

Or does Niels get 20 points because he has the 3rd largest amount of tokens based purely on numbers (9, 3, & 1) and ignoring whether someone has a loan or not (is Julia considered 2nd place even with a loan, which pushes Niels down to 3rd)?

It's this ambiguous rule why I broke this down into question #1 & #2. #3 was also something I read on the board and never saw an answer to.

Basic rule of thumb: If there are - say - equal 1sts, the next place is 3rd.

Like it is at school in exams - the top two kids are 1st=, the third kid is ... err .. third.

As for points: I'd say the first two share 55+35 and get 45 each, the third gets 20. You can't allocate in total more points in tied situations than would have been allocated in non-tied situations, so positions have to be aggregated then shared.

Here are the answers:

Question 1
Player A - 55 points (tied for first)
Player B - 55 points (tied for first)
Player C - 20 points (2 players have more tokens, so takes 3rd)
Player D - 0 points (3 players have more tokens, so takes 4th)

Question 2
Player A - 55 points (most tokens amongst those without loans)
Player C - 35 points (2nd most tokens amongst those without a loan)
Player D - 20 points (3rd most tokens amongst those without a loan)
Player B - 0 points (has loan, # of tokens no longer considered)

Question 3
Player A - 55 points (most tokens)
Player B - 35 points (2nd most tokens)
Player C - 20 points (ties for 3rd most, even though has none)
Player D - 20 points (ties for 3rd most, even though has none)

Note that players who get down to 0 tokens and still score bonus points have used their tokens very well!

TICKET TO RIDE NETHERLANDS is a friendly tie game. When people are tied, they all get the maximum points for their position.

Players who take Loans are ignored when calculating bonuses. They always score 0.
