Hi everyone
I am getting into X-Wing and have tried the Firespray a few times now. The first time, I loaded it with as many upgrades as possible (when we get new ships, my friend and I always play like this to see how the ships 'work'). It got slaughtered. The second time, I had a couple of missiles, the proximity mine and the HLC. It was a bit better but a waste of points in the end (I realize there were still too many upgrades). After asking around, someone recommended the Firespray with just the HLC, which is what I flew. It still under-performed. Admittedly my friend focus-fired on it, so it melted in a round. Does anyone have any advice on how to use/fly this ship. I hope I didn't waste money on it.
Thanks for the help.

The firespray is AWESOME. It was definitely not a waste of money. If you have a recon specialist, I like to put that on. In general, if you use a HLC, really should try to get Krassis. Otherwise just a bare bounty hunter is a solid ship. One of my favorite builds is 2 firespray with bombs and Soontir Fel loaded w/ PTL and stealth. Keep flying the firespray!!

There's a few ways to run the Firespray.

First is a simple HLC. Your strategy here is to sit at Range 3 as long as possible, and take potshots with the HLC (4 dice and the defender doesn't get extra defense dice). You need to have other ships to mix it up and stop the enemy from just rushing right at you however. If you're going to go with the HLC, Krassis is a good idea as opposed to the base Bounty Hunter.

A recon specialist is a very popular upgrade for the Firespray. Two focus tokens give you a lot more defense, and let you mix it up a bit in combat. This can be taken with the HLC or just by itself, it works well both ways. Just don't find yourself over-relying on the focus action. If you have a better option, don't feel you're stuck focusing.

Seismic bombs are also very good if you find yourself pretty good at predicting enemy maneuvers. I don't, so I haven't really used these.

My go-to list with a simple Firespray is: Krassis+HLC, Howlrunner + Stealth Device, 3x Academy Pilots. It's a simple mini-swarm list that uses the Firespray as artillery support basically. Howlrunner is the #1 target here, but if they don't respect the Firespray, it can take care of them in a hurry.

EDIT: Some other, slightly less useful upgrades: Gunner (Miss with HLC? Ok, I get another try with my primary), APL (shuttles are just better with these), Engine Upgrade (If you want to fly in the thick of things). I would not recommend Ion Cannon unless you also take Rebel Captive, and then once again I feel the shuttle is better. Good luck!

Krassis Trelix with HLC rocks. That gives you 4 dice at any range (with no defense range bonus for your enemies) + a valuable re-roll. Add in Recon Specialist and you get double focus. One for attack and one left for defense is nice

Engine Upgrade: allows you to adjust your ship quite a bit after your initial maneuver. Makes it easier to get something in one of your arcs.

best equipment you can use on firespray is gunner or PTL, anything else is mostly frivolous, sometimes use a mine, but ususlly only a 2 point one, sometimes APL.

I will have to disagree with this opinion. PTL on the firespray means you have to have Kath or Fett (more points just for the EPS). The dial for the firespray isn't horrible, but it isn't the best either and shedding the stress could be tough.

Gunner is alright for the firespray, as with really any ship. I just have never found that much use for the gunner for the 5 points. I would rather get a recon specialist.

I'm going to have to disagree also. Out of any ship that can have crew right now, it probably makes the most use out of recon specialist.

completely disagree. PTL on a Firespray can be good when used together with recon spec, but severely limits your maneuver options, and can easily allow opponents to get into your blind spots.

You should consider either expert handling or engine upgrade, these 2 do help the Firespray a lot

Expert handling on any large ship is awesome. I have played against it and it is so hard to predict where they will end up because of the large base. The one thing I have noticed is that people forget you get to remove target locks when you roll.

One of my favorite builds (originally built because of the 2 YT fortress build) is triple Bounty Hunters. Comes in at 99 pts with plenty of shields and hull and a fair amount of red dice coming and going!

Gonna put my vote in for Gunner or Rebel Captive. Seismic charges can be cute if you have the extra points as well, 2 pts. for free damage area of effect damage is a good deal.

I'd avoid loading up on upgrades, this game tends to reward more ships with fewer upgrades than less ships with more upgrades.
