Congratulations, again, to the model NHL franchise!

Pretty unheard of in today's modern sports world.

Oh, the bear we're already 3-1 against this season?

In all actuality, I'm excited to see what the playoffs are like in the Eastern Conference. It will be fun to start some new rivalries.

I was about to bring up the Blues, but it's already been 10 years since their 25-season streak ended.

I am excited that the Bolts have made the playoffs after a few years out, but that excitement is tempered by the injury to Ben Bishop (his 38 wins and a revived blue line being the primary reason TB is in the playoffs). I feel good things in the future for TB, especially with the recent contract extension given to Steve Yzerman. He is that rare exception of the great player that is also a great business man. Recent drafts and trades made by him are only helping to build a great future for the Lightning as a franchise.

That being said, it's kind of hard to imagine the Eastern finals not being the Bruins and Pens, but hope springs eternal.

Go Islanders! That would possibly get Calgary a better draft pick this year, since it is "next-year" territory, for the foreseeable future, for my team.

Well, I can't complain, the Flyers and Blue Jackets both made it, so I'm happy.

BTW, the new playoff format should be interesting to follow this year. The old method of 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6, and 4 vs. 5 in each conference has been replaced by 1 vs. wild card and 2 vs. 3 in each division. Is this fair to the 2 and 3 seeds? We shall see.

EDIT: BTW this could result in the 4th and 5th place teams in a division getting both wild card spots. Whichever team wins the 1 vs. wild card matchup in each division plays the winner of the 2 vs. 3 in that division...which means you could have a team from the "other" division in your conference as your second round opponent for the "division final" and the conference championship round could involve two teams from the same division.

I'm rooting for the Blue Jackets. Why? I'm a Sabres fan so I got nothing else.

Ok, in all reality, I think it would do the league well for the Blue Jackets to succeed in some fashion. Also they fire off a frickin' cannon when the team scores, which is awesome.

No, I'm pretty sure it was the Devils going 0-12 in shootouts this season.

Yeah, that's insane. I read the article on Grantland yesterday (http://grantland.com/the-triangle/new-jersey-devils-shootout...) and couldn't believe it. That is some next level misery.

We get a bolt of lightning (electrical arc) fired off whenever we score. Makes your hair stand up if you're too close laugh

No. actually the bolt is pretty high above the crowd...no chance of someone getting zapped.

That's true. The original topic dealt with East Coast, thus my comment about Blue Jackets.

In the West it probably would be the Blues. Minnesota is an option, too. The other teams grate on me for one reason or another.

Spurs are currently in a 17 year playoff streak.
Portland Trailblazers had a 21 season streak through 2003.

Given that the NBA and NHL allow half their teams into the playoffs each year it's not surprising the NBA and NHL would have long playoff appearance streaks.

I'm legitimately curious - did the Trailblazers or Spurs have much postseason success in those streaks? I know really little about the the NBA (I have heard the Spurs called the NBA's little brother version of the Wings).

(I know I could google, but I'm interested in the conversation. Also I'm lazy).

Portland Trailblazers: No championships during streak 1990 and 1992 made it to finals.
San Antonio Spurs: Four championships 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 (and counting)

Sounds similar to baseball:

Braves - 14 seasons, 1 championship
Yankees - 13 seasons, 4 championships

That is pretty amazing in baseball.
How many playoff teams were allowed during these streaks?

Just looked up gridiron football.
Longest streaks ever at 9 seasons for Colts and Cowboys, one championship for each during streak.

For comparison, Red Wings also have four championships during their 23 streak: 1997, 1998, 2002, 2008. Two other Finals appearances as well (1995, 2009).

Only 8 total (4 per league) for most of the years, but for the first 3 seasons of the Braves' streak, it was only 4 (2 per league) total!

Next closest MLB playoff streak? 5.
