English open by purchasing Governor. Obviously, they will shortly be removing St Mary's and Pemaquid from their deck, and playing a committed military strategy.

How do you respond as the French? If you siege Pemaquid, you should win it, but the English likely counter with a simultaneous siege of Port Royal. Better to settle or siege Halifax to slow the English down, but if the cards don't cooperate, do you attack Pemaquid anyway?

Or do you trade & buy military as fast as possible?

Or you can fortify, though I've read Tim Seitz' analysis of why forts are slightly worse than just buying more troops?

Or do you just start developing, and hope a combination of ambushes, light military, and fast settling can hold off the English onslaught long enough to settle out?

It is really important for French what kind of cards do yo have in your hands at the beginning. Therefore I can suggest several things in this case:

1. Do not expand at all.
2. If it's possible, settle Halifax yourself, Home support and Cureurs is a must
3. Siege of Pemaquid might help in this case, as it will prevent british from using Pemaquid as a starting point for an early attack on Port Royal. They will have to use Boston which is a powerful card. If they governor out Pemaquid, you can withdraw and claim your Regular infantry back at the same turn.
4. Go indian. If you have both Port Royal and Halifax, you can wait for the right moment, surrender a location and raid it if you have enough indians. Also, it will slow down british player in purchasing military cards as he will always be vulnerable to an ambush.
5. Fortify Louisbourg.

From my experience, it is possible to stop british player opening with this strategy, however, you will most likely lose Port Royal and Halifax in time, and your goal is to defend Louisbourg at any cost. French are in better relations with indians, so keep ambushing/raiding. Force british player to buy Indian Leader and even forts - anything that slows down the downfall of Louisbourg.

However, the easiest way to fix this strategy, is to use optional rule - No Governor for starting locations

Attack Halifax... engage the British in a siege there that you don't need to
win, just commit enough to tie the brits up.

Get Fort and siege guns asap. Put them use asap. The French will not be stronger than the british except on the first turn. Be absolutely ruthless from turn one on and the hammer can break.

Fortify louisburg and the capitals. Raid your ass off. Do everything in your power to keep the british player off balance, it has to be total war from turn one onwards.

Do you upgrade your town to city meanwhile? If not what is your plan to win?

The idea of an early siege is a good one, but IMHO it is more to freeze your cards there than keeping the Brits busy. So you can cycle your trader and hides cards faster.

Yes. It is a race. You are trying to put your 12 disks on the board before he takes you Quebec city.

Try to relax, it will hurt less. Also, hope that the British player doesn't actually know what they are doing, or is prone to mistakes.

CdB, Fort, and military should be among your first and only purchases. Settle Halifax, if able. If they settle Halifax early, siege immediately. This is a mistake by the British. Sieging Pemaquid isn't a horrible idea, but it is completely futile, against a good HH player. If they fight you there, it is a mistake. Pemaquid means nothing if you can't settle it, by having Quebec in hand. As you said, a good HH player will just eat Port Royal, and gladly hand you Pemaquid's cube.

Fort where you can, it makes it more difficult, but mostly you are hoping to capitalize on any mistakes.
