Here are a couple of other variations.

When players hire seamen, they are kept facedown on the table so no one knows who they are. They become faceup when they lower and stay faceup as long as they continue to be a member of that whaleboat's crew. Only faceup seamen can be bribed.

When a non-legendary whale is drawn, a 1d6 is used to determine how many of those "easy" whales are in the pod (since whales of this sort tend to school). There can be no more whales in the pod, however, than whaleboats in the game (so a max of four). If a whaleboat kills a whale, that boat immediately becomes unfast and must start over attacking another whale. The other whaleboats continue to be fast to the other whales in the pod; only the killing boat must become fast to a new whale. This rule allows more whaling to be done and increase the number of barrels of oil taken.

During the final chase, players on their turn may use any oil they have to hire sailors from the discard deck to supplement their crews up to the 7 crewmen limit. The standard rules apply (30 barrels for the first crewman, 20 for the second, etc.). If a player has only 10 or 20 barrels of oil, he can hire one seaman from the normal Sailor deck (one per turn) until he is out of oil.
