For Tikal, i posted pictures in the picture section and the 3D model files in the file section.

Then, i manually created links back and forth:
3D model: http://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/101932/tikal-temple-pieces...
Pic: http://boardgamegeek.com/image/1974218/tikal

For the picture it was only possible to link to the model by posting a reply to my own picture and putting the link there.

- Is there a better way?
- Will it be possible to post a picture as preview together with uploaded files? That could not only for 3D models but maybe also with other material, like PDF/Word templates.
- Should i rather use thingiverse.com and link there from BGG?

The Files area would be a good place...

You can put a link to the files in the description of the image, and vice versa.

I think your cross-linking is the closest I've seen to what you want. I'm not sure if BGG might be interested in adding the functionality: it might save some bandwidth from file downloads?

I would be tempted to post a preview under images, with a link underneath to the thingiverse page. But then I remember that my default subscription includes files but not images. So I'm not sure what to recommend. ninja

A link to a filepage in the images' description text did not work, unfortunately.

I used the file section and it seems to be the best way currently.
