Hello. I've finally worked out what kind of game I'm after!

- 2-4 players (teams is fine)
- 2 hours playtime Max
- not complex (but not mindless dice rolling)
- small map fighting game like Memoir 44 not a huge campaign like Game of Thrones.
- any theme

I have tried Kemet and found it a bit too quick and impossible to explain many of the rules thematically. I want to plan clever sweeping manoeuvres rather than upgrade my army with powers.

Would really appreciate some help

Nexus Ops?

plays great 2-4 in 45min-1.5hrs, has a tight map where everyone is in each others face pretty much at all times, has very simple rules (it does have a lot of dice combat though). if kemet is too quick nexus ops might be too quick too, but id give it a look. its pretty much all about clever hyper aggressive tactical maneuvering.

Despite your hope, there is not even any inherent symbolism; gravity is simply a coincidence.

Not quite a skirmish, and the map might be larger (but not complex at all): 1775: Rebellion.

Thanks guys.

Nexus ops isn't quite it. It looks really ugly for a start and I think I'd prefer something about manoeuvres and tactics rather than resources and building.

1775 does seem pretty cool but it's a battle not a war that I'm after.

Take a serious look at Warhammer: Diskwars.

I resisted at first, but once I played it it scratched the exact itch you described above.

It's inexpensive, fast to play, simple to learn but boasts deep tactical gameplay, plays in a small area, has expansions coming soon, is 2 to 4 players and scales well.

How about Viktory II?

You can try it online first to see if you like it too.

If you have any interest in a miniatures game, Song of Blades and Heroes is an excellent skirmish game. You can translate it as a hex and counter game, but would have to figure out where to get or how to make the pieces.

Yes! Looks great except for the warhammer brand. I'll give it a shot

I would have said Nexus Ops too.

You might look at Cutthroat Caverns. It starts as a co-op dungeon crawl type game, with lots of little things for you to do to sabotage your allies. Then, when one of you gets the treasure, it turns full cutthroat, every adventurer for themselves bloodfest.

Good fun. angry
