Just bought the second edition, and I'm playing soon with a few people who have played only the first edition.

I have never played the first edition. Are the differences limited enough that I can explain just what has changed (and if so, what has changed), or has the game changed so much that I would be better off starting the rules explanation from the beginning?

If they are well versed with the first edition, you can simply explain the differences. Most important is the new strategy you'll need due to the new map design, and that isn't something you can teach by the rules . Most changes are rather small and could still be explained before or in the first round.

The problem is that I have never played the first edition myself, so I don't know what the differences are.

Did they play with the expansions or vanilla 1st ed? If the latter:

-6th player (Martell) and new layout of the southern areas
-Ports
-Siege Engines
-New House cards (both strength distribution and abilities)
-Special Consolidate can now be used for mustering in the area
-Special Raid can remove Defense orders
-Wildlings' deck instead of fixed reward/penalty
-Addition of choice in the Westeros cards
-Garrison in the main House area
-1 more Knight unit limit
-Little but meaningful differences in the board (Kingswood has 1 supply, Sunset sea not bordering Highgarden, Oldtown is now a Stronghold)

Pretty sure they have only played vanilla.

Thank you for the list.
