I just realized I need a space themed game for my collection and these are the three currently on my radar. I'm leaning towards Galaxy Defenders because I'm definitely a "cult of the new" type of gamer.

They are all relatively different so it'd depend on tastes.

Galaxy Defenders is a co-op battle, scenario game.

Alien Frontiers is a dice rolling, worker placement game.

Eclipse is a 4X resource management with some light combat.

Agreed... you need to decide what 'a space game' means to you thematically. Does it mean combat? Does it mean space opera? Does is mean planetary colonization? Those are the three options you currently have, and all three are mechanically tied to those themes.

Just to make your life harder, if 'a space game' means running your own spaceship for profit and glory, you need to look at Firefly: The Game or Merchant of Venus (second edition).

You also need to consider time commitment: Alien Frontiers is at least 30 minutes shorter than Galaxy Defenders or Eclipse.

Well, if you are looking for space opera, look no further than Twilight Imperium (Third Edition). Space combat, space politics, building a technological empire, and everyone plays their own individual alien races. It's fantastic, although it does take an entire night to play (like 6-8 hours).

Eclipse kinda gets to this niche, but in my humble opinion, is less "space opera" and more space exploration.

For a fun space themed game, why not look at Galaxy Trucker, also?

Eclipse is far more economic/euro in its implementation. If you want a shorter TI3, Eclipse isn't it.

Galaxy Defenders is kinda like playing one of the popular space 1st person shooter video games. My wife played the first scenario with me and we lost badly, but man was this game fun.

Miniature battles on modular maps with character growth and it's scenario based, that's the best way I can describe it. I really really enjoy this game.

Since we are throwing sci-fi games out there even if they are wildly different, I'll add Level 7 Omega Protocol.

Can I throw a space themed deck builder into the ring with Core Worlds.

There are so many space games that scratch so many itches.

Galaxy defenders is technically not a space themed game. More of a scifi alien game...think xcom

Alien frontiers is a good game, more of a colonization game

And eclipse is a 4x game with heavy euro

Personally I would recommend all, but eclipse is a good 2-6 player game
With alien frontiers being lighter weight but gets a lot of table time with my group. There are better tactical co-ops I would recommend. Zombicide or gears of war from a game point of view, but galaxy defenders is fun

Definitely worth playing. The one issue I've had with it is that it's easier to come up with an offensive strategy than it is to understand how to escape from it. So with two noobs of equal skill, one of them will get an advantage over the other, and the person winning will be like "I bet there's something you can do about this, but I can't figure out what! Sorry!"

.. More of a scifi alien game...think xcom "
What i mean is that for me Galaxy defenders does not take place in space
(deep space, orbit, ...) .. takes place on earth. So even if the aliens
come from space for me not a space game.

I corrected my sentence above.. meant to say scifi .. not sure what happened shake..
need to read again before i hit submit.
( that or stop sniffing glue whistle )
