My latest session report, finishing off the Dwarrowdelf cycle.

Heroes Hama, Eowyn, Prince Imrahil starting Threat = 29
Threat = 0

This was an epic deck building adventure for me. I knew I needed Hama for his ability and Feint. I needed some questing power from Eowyn…but I also wanted Lore Elrond so I could pay for any allies and put Rivendell Blade on him. But I wanted a Leadership hero too so I tried Song cards. Plus secrecy cards, plus questing allies, plus weapons, and chump blockers, and some unique attachments for Elrond, and resource acceleration and card draw….and most importantly: cancelation effects. There were so many cards I wanted or needed in my opening hand that it never worked. I finally got to my 3 heroes above, made a ton of refinements to the deck and got one that has consistently beat this quest.

Starting Hand: Feint, Arwen Undomiel, Gandalf, Winged Guardian, Dunedain Wanderer, A Test of Will

Turn 1:
draw Winged Guardian
add a Resource to Hama 1 Eowyn 1 Prince Imrahil 1
Commit Eowyn, Prince Imrahil, Willpower = 6
reveal Stray Goblin Staging Threat = 5
add 1 Progress to Nearing the Gate - 1
Refresh, Threat = 1

So a Feint in my starting hand sets the stage for never questing with Hama, always feinting the Balrog and then attacking it for no damage to get the Feint back. I mulligan if it is not there and hope for the best.

Turn 2
add a Resource to Hama 2 Eowyn 2 Prince Imrahil 2
draw & Attach Resourceful to Hama, Eowyn 1
Commit Eowyn, Prince Imrahil Willpower = 6
reveal Leaping Flame, cancel with A Test of Will, Eowyn 0, Staging Threat = 5
add 1 Progress to Nearing the Gate - 2
Hama 1, plays Feint on Durins Bane, Counter-Spell was shadow
Hama attacks Durins Bane, no damage, Feint is returned to hand
Refresh, Threat = 2

Now Hama can gain resources instead of spending the one he gets every turn. The treacheries are so terrible in this quest, I have to have A Test of Will if possible. Right now I could not handle 2 Balrog attacks.

Turn 3
add Resources to Hama 3 Eowyn 1 Prince Imrahil 3
draw Ancient Mathom
Play Winged Guardian, Hama 1
Commit Eowyn, Prince Imrahil Willpower = 6
Reveal Goblin Swordsman Staging Threat = 6
Hama 1, plays Feint on Durins Bane, Fiery Sword was shadow
Hama attacks Durins Bane, no damage, Feint is returned to hand
Refresh, Threat = 3

Winged Guardian is nice..but usually ends up killed or discarded.

Turn 4
add Resources to Hama 3 Eowyn 2 Prince Imrahil 4
draw Escort from Edoras
Play Arwen Undomiel, Eowyn 0
Attach Spear of the Mark to Hama 2
Commit Eowyn, Arwen Undomiel Willpower = 6
reveal Fires in the Deep, discard Winged Guardian, Staging Threat = 6
Hama 1, plays Feint on Durins Bane, Goblin Tunnels was shadow
Hama attacks Durins Bane, no damage, Feint is returned to hand
Refresh, Threat = 4

Case in point on the Winged Guardian! Spear of the Mark is great on Hama in this quest since the Balrog stays in the staging area, and Arwen will free up Imrahil from questing.

Turn 5
add Resources to Hama 4 Eowyn 1 Prince Imrahil 5
draw Lórien Guide
play Gandalf, Prince Imrahil 1, Hama 3
Gandalf lets me draw Winged Guardian, Valiant Sacrifice, Escort from Edoras
Commit Eowyn, Arwen Undomiel Willpower = 6
reveal Ranging Goblin, add a Damage to Eowyn, Staging Threat = 8
Unsuccessful quest, Threat Level counter = 6 (+2)
Feint played on Goblin Swordsman, Hama 2, Stray Goblin shadow,
Gandalf defends Durins Bane, Second Deep shadow, 2 damage on Gandalf,
Hama kills Goblin Swordsman, return Feint
Gandalf is discarded, Ranging Goblin and Goblin Swordsman shuffled into encounter deck
Play Valiant Sacrifice, Prince Imrahil 0, draw Dunedain Wanderer, Horn of Gondor
Refresh, Threat = 7

Important to get card draws, Valiant Sacrifice is very handy in this quest.

Turn 6
add Resources to Hama 4 Eowyn 2 Prince Imrahil 1
Draw and Attach Horn of Gondor to Eowyn, Hama 3
Commit Eowyn, Arwen Undomiel Willpower = 6
reveal Inner Flame, Staging Threat = 5
add 1 Progress to Nearing the Gate - 3
Prince Imrahil defends Stray Goblin, Second Deep shadow
Hama 2, plays Feint on Durins Bane, Massing in the Deep was shadow
Hama kills Stray Goblin, Feint is returned to hand
Refresh, Threat = 8
Enemies are taken care of easily with having Prince and Hama and Feint all available every turn during combat phase.

Turn 7
add Resources to Hama 4 Eowyn 3 Prince Imrahil 2
draw Gandalf
Play Dunedain Wanderer, Prince Imrahil 0
Commit Eowyn, Arwen Undomiel Willpower = 6
reveal Leaping Flame, Staging Threat = 4
Dunedain Wanderer dies as he defends Durins Bane, Watchful Eyes shadow
Horn adds a Resource to Eowyn 4
add 2 Progress to Nearing the Gate - 5
Hama 3, plays Feint on Durins Bane, Chance Encounter was shadow
Hama & Prince Imrahil attack Durins Bane, 5 damage, Feint is returned to hand
Durins Bane regenerates 3, 2 damage
Refresh, Threat = 9

Well it stinks to lose the Wanderer as soon as he came in, but I only have one feint so either he died then or during combat. At least the Horn of Gondor is getting some usage. Time to start putting some damage on the Balrog

Turn 8
add Resources to Hama 5 Eowyn 5 Prince Imrahil 1
draw Thrors Key
play Winged Guardian, Hama 3
Play Lórien Guide, Eowyn 2
Commit Eowyn, Arwen Undomiel Willpower = 6
reveal The Mountains Roots, Staging Threat = 5
add 1 Progress to Nearing the Gate – 6
Travel to The Mountains Roots
Hama 2, plays Feint on Durins Bane, Ranging Goblin was shadow
Hama & Prince Imrahil & Lórien Guide attack Durins Bane, 8 damage, Feint is returned to hand
Durins Bane regenerates 3, 5 damage
Refresh, Threat = 10

Thrors Key is in this deck to help with Second Deep if it comes out early. I have lost this quest because of that card being in the staging area dealing 3 threat, or as the active location.

Turn 9
add Resources to Hama 4 Eowyn 3 Prince Imrahil 2
draw Steward of Gondor
Attach Steward of Gondor to Hama 6, Prince Imrahil 0
Attach Ancient Mathom to Mountain Roots, Eowyn 2
Commit Lórien Guide, Arwen Undomiel, Prince Imrahil Willpower = 5
Lorien Guide adds a Progress to explore The Mountains Roots
Ancient Mathom draws Resourceful, Gondorian Spearman, Timely Aid
reveal Goblin Tunnels Staging Threat = 6
Unsuccessful, Threat Level =11 (+1)
Travel to Goblin Tunnels
Hama 5, plays Feint on Durins Bane, Goblin Swordsman was shadow
Hama, Eowyn attack Durins Bane, 8 damage, Feint is returned to hand
Durins Bane regenerates 3, 5 damage
Refresh, Threat = 12

Preparing for a power turn. Got my SofG so now I am getting a lot of Tactics resources. Mathom is still one of my favorite cards…and having Lorien Guide to trigger it as soon as I played it is awesome. I am stalling, I am not ready to move on so I was very glad to see a location get revealed.

Turn 10
add Resources to Hama 9 Eowyn 3 Prince Imrahil 1
draw Unexpected Courage
Attach Unexpected Courage to Hama, Eowyn 1
Play Timely Aid, Prince Imrahil 0
Top 5 cards: 2 Imladris Stargazers, Snowbourn Scout, Lórien Guide, Horn of Gondor
move Imladris Stargazer into play, return others and shuffle
Attach Resourceful to Eowyn, Hama 8
exhaust Imladris Stargazer to look at and reorder top 5 cards.
play Gondorian Spearman, Hama 6
Commit Lórien Guide, add a Progress to Goblin Tunnels, Arwen Undomiel, Eowyn
Willpower =7
reveal Whip Lash, remove Resourceful from Hama, Staging Threat = 4
add 3 Progress to Goblin Tunnels - 4
Hama 5, plays Feint on Durins Bane, Whip Lash was shadow
Attack with Gondorian Spearman, Prince Imrahil, Hama, 14 damage, Feint is returned to hand
Durins Bane regenerates 3, 11 damage
Refresh, Threat = 13

POWER TURN!! Got a TON of stuff I have needed to take on the next stage and it came just in time (I kept hoping for a location to slow me down). Had a decision to make because of Timely Aid, decided the Stargazer to help me get some more cards I need was the way to go. Losing Hama’s Resourceful was not a big deal. The Bane is getting weaker…..

Turn 11
add Resources to Hama 8 Eowyn 3 Prince Imrahil 1
draw Sneak Attack
Commit Lórien Guide add 1 Progress to Goblin Tunnels – 5, Arwen Undomiel, Eowyn Willpower =7
reveal Counter-Spell, cancel with A Test of Will, Eowyn 2, Staging Threat = 4
add 2 Progress to explore Goblin Tunnels
add 1 Progress to Nearing the Gate – 7
Hama 7, plays Feint on Durins Bane, Orc Drummer was shadow
Attack with Gondorian Spearman, Prince Imrahil, Hama, 17 damage, Feint is returned to hand
Durins Bane regenerates 3, 14 damage
exhaust Imladris Stargazer to re-order top 5 cards
Refresh, Threat = 14

Put Sneak Attack at the top of my deck to get Gandalf in soon, Counter Spell is the worse treachery in this deck. A Test of Will is MANDATORY for this thing.

Turn 12
add Resources to Hama 10 Eowyn 4 Prince Imrahil 2
draw Valiant Sacrifice
Commit Lórien Guide, Arwen Undomiel, Eowyn Willpower = 7
Reveal Many Thonged Whip and attach to Durins Bane
add 3 Progress to Nearing the Gate - 10
advances quest to The Rear Guard
add 4 Progress to The Rear Guard - 4
Sneak Attack Gandalf, draw Feint, 2 Dwarven Tombs, Prince Imrahil 1
Hama 9, plays Feint on Durins Bane, Goblin Swordsman was shadow
Attack with Gandalf, Gondorian Spearman, Prince Imrahil, Hama, 26 damage
exhaust Imladris Stargazer reorder top 5 cards
return Gandalf to Hand, Horn effect Eowyn 5
Play Valiant Sacrifice, Prince Imrahil 0
draw Dunedain Wanderer, Gondorian Spearman
Durins Bane regenerates 3, 23 damage
Refresh, Threat = 15

Of course I knew what cards were coming so I could plan accordingly for the 6 cards I drew this turn. In hindsight I should have put a Dwarven Tomb on top to snipe A Test of Will from my discard…but I got lucky. Bane is limping badly….

Turn 13
add Resources to Hama 12 Eowyn 7 Prince Imrahil 1
draw and attach Resourceful to Prince Imrahil, Hama 11
Play 2 Dwarven Tombs, return 2 A Test of Wills, Eowyn 5
Play Gandalf, Hama 7, Eowyn 4, draw 2 Snowbourn Scouts, A Test of Will
exhaust Imladris Stargazer re-order top 5 cards
Play Gondorian Spearman, Hama 5
Commit Lórien Guide, Arwen Undomiel, Eowyn Willpower = 7
Reveal Counter-Spell Cancel with A Test of Will, Eowyn 3
add 7 Progress to The Rear Guard - 11
Hama 4, plays Feint on Durins Bane, Many Thonged Whip was shadow
Attack with Gandalf, 2 Gondorian Spearmans, Prince Imrahil, Hama, 34 damage
advance quest to Last Lord of Moria
Hama 4, plays 2nd Feint on immediately attacking Durins Bane, Goblin Scout was shadow
Durins Bane regenerates 3, 31 damage
Horn effect add a Resource to Eowyn 4
Refresh, Threat = 16

Got very lucky that A counter spell came out this turn and not last…especially since a treachery was the next card! PHEW! Balrog is hurt….time to go for the kill! 2 Feints for this turn was great.

Turn 14
add Resources to Hama 7 Eowyn 6 Prince Imrahil 3
draw and attach Palantir to Eowyn 5
exhaust Eowyn and Palantir
Announce: attachment
draw Thrors Key, Steward of Gondor, Horn of Gondor
exhaust Imladris Stargazer re-order top 5 cards
play Dunedain Wanderer, Prince Imrahil 1
Play Escort from Edoras Eowyn 3
Commit Escort from Edoras, Arwen Undomiel Willpower =6
reveal Chance Encounter, cancel with A Test of Will, Eowyn 2
add 2 Progress to Last Lord of Moria - 2
Discard Escort from Edoras, Eowyn 3
Travel to Dark Pit
Hama 6, plays Feint on Durins Bane, Goblin Scout was shadow
Attack with everyone to add 13 more damage for a total of 44 damage out of 27, return Feint to hand
ready everyone
Threat = 17
remove 3 Damage from Durins Bane - 41
exhaust Winged Guardian, Lórien Guide, Gondorian Spearman
reveal Lórien Guide, Imladris Stargazer, Sneak Attack for a total of 7, which is greater than negative 14, Durins Bane falls into the Dark Pit and I win.

Yup…a Palantir. I was happy I got to use it in combination with the Stargazer….which helps mitigate its possible multi Doomed 2s. But I was bummed that none of the attachments were of any use to me, too bad it did not come out sooner. So this is a great deck for this quest. I think I used 90% of my cards so you can create a similar deck off of this session report.

Nice session report!

Regarding the Palantir - the 3 cards you draw are from the *Encounter* deck, not your *Player* deck (so you'd have to choose Location, Enemy, or Treachery). Stargazer can't help you here. I think its biggest strength may be in a 2 or 3 player game where you will be able to know ALL of the encounter cards that will be revealed during the staging step (Risk Some Light is the only other card that can provide this knowledge). Even then, its threat-boosting drawback is pretty significant - probably best only for those crucial turns where you absolutely must know what's coming off the encounter deck.

Wow that was a mistake on my part! I guess I just assumed it was player deck when it said draw a card, but now I get it...gandalf is right, a palantir is a dangerous tool. Thank you very much for the clarification

Wonderful report!!

The satisfaction of completing this quest is well rewarded. Looks like an excellent deck too. I know I considered Eowyn for questing as well. I liked your approach and the feint-hama loop is a great tactic (no pun intended).

What is next on your list? Have you considered video commentary?

Phew, I am glad to hear that other people were struggling with this quest just as much as I did in the past couple of days. I neither have the cards for Dain nor for Hama, so this turned out to be quite a challenge.

I eventually made it through the quest using the dangerous powers of the Palantir, several comebacks of Gandalf (through Stand and Fight) and repeatly defending with my heros (in conjunction with Protector of Lorien and Glorfindel's healing abilities) to finally defeat the Balrog.

Since I had all three "Second Deep" cards up early in the game, it took me around 10 turns to finish Stage 1B. Luckily, Dunhere was around to at least occasionally clear up the staging area from more enemies.

Here is a list of casualties from this long adventure:
3x Envoy of Pelargir
2x Master of the Forge
2x Gleowine
1x Northern Tracker
3x Arwen Undomiel (yes, she died three times in a row!)
1x Henamarth Rivsersong
2x Imladris Stargazer (only the final third one was able to keep the top 5 cards of my deck in good order)

I used my last copy of Gandalf to deliver the final strike. If I had needed him earlier, Elrond, Glorfindel and Dunhere would have been lost forever...
