Our first two-player experience with the expanded version of Lord of the Rings showed us that Friends and Foes offers a much darker and complex journey through Middle Earth. Instead of merely coping with the travel paths (moves that have become almost automatic by now), needing to deal with a constant progression of goblins, orcs and spiders on the Foes cards was very taxing to the Fellowship.
Skipping some the boards and getting fewer special Location cards also proved a mixed blessing. In all, we became more immersed in this version of the game, but found that it played longer and with more constant pressure (the revised rules provide that even drawing a positive Event Tile places a new Foe in your path, so you don't get the luxury of any "free" turns).
Given the higher level of challenges and choices, the game seems it should be even better for larger parties. We generally easily finished the original game while starting Sauron at 12, but this time he started at 15 and we only completed half of the Mordor board before evil consumed us.
Looking forward to trying it again.
