So we mixed up the Discount and Bounty rules the other night and played wrong. The thing is, the way we played worked out very well.

What we did was put the discount cubes on cards that weren't bought as normal for the discount variant. However, instead of using the cubes to discount the cost of the card they were placed on we played where you paid full cost for that card but then received the cubes which were on it and could spend them later just like Bounty cubes to add to your score in later rounds.

It ended up performing the same function of the discount variant, making an expensive and hard-to-use letter more attractive to buy, but in addition also made the game go faster and gave the players more options. Spread the cubes out to make several good purchases on the same round, use them all at once to get one great card, or really hoard your cubes over multiple turns to try to get one of the 15 victory point cards? It created a whole new set of options and sped up the process of getting to the better cards allowing the game to end faster.
