The art style totally reminds me of traditional hanafuda cards. At first I thought it was a game you played with a hanafuda deck. Anyone else feel the same?

The game's designer does, according to the last section in the rule book.

Right! There is a note in the original version saying:

"The illustrations of the game are created to pay homage to a traditional Japanese card game called Hanafuda (literally the flower game)."

But it is just an homage -- the game cannot be played with Hanafuda cards because the specific distribution of images is very important to gameplay.

I love hanafuda cards (especially the game koi-koi), so that makes me automatically interested in this.
