I have not kept up on the latest and the greatest for about 6 months, although I do have some friends that do (Scott!) and just wondering what are the best new Euros you are playing. Concordia is being played a lot with our group. Great game!

Thanks!

Caverna and Terra Mystica are the ones I'm probably hearing most about at the moment. I guess TM isn't that 'new' any more, but distribution problems means a lot of people have only really started to get their hands on it in the last 6 months or so.

So far you named the only one I enjoyed out of the bunch that came out of Essen. Concordia rocks, but not much else did.

Lewis and Clark was the only one that came across as interesting to me.

My favorites from Essen are:

Russian Railraods
Patchistory
Spyrium
Nations
Caverna
Rococo
Amerigo
Bruxelles 1893
Concordia

For me, it was an excellent Essen!

Most new is just a re-skin of something else and to me is just a big pile of "meh" IMO. Here's what I think are the standpoints in the past 24 months that I've played or purchased:

Robinson Crusoe
Myrmes
Terra Mystica
Viticulture (In execution of theme)

And.....that's about it. Most everything else is just a re-skin or re- implementation of some other game I already own. Looking forward in 2014 though, I'm most excited about Argent Consortium. Worker placement AND spell slinging? Now that sounds interesting!

The OP needs to get over his train hate(tm) and play Russian Railroads. I've played or own all but two of these games, and liked them all to varying degrees.

Robinson Crusoe has been the only game of the last year that I've felt excited about. It was wonderful when I managed to get it last summer.

Look closer ...

... only then you'll start to realize that:

Spoiler (click to reveal)
There are no trains in "Russian Railroad"

Best and most recent Euro to hit the US that I'm aware of....

Madeira

Amazing game...but arguably not for everyone. A real Euro brain burner.

Russian Railroads, as several have mentioned, is fairly amazing. Those who are scared off by the 'train' theme will be pleasantly surprised. If you like worker placement with interesting choices and lots of ways to score points this one is a strong candidate.

Well said. I was amazed it took the thread this long for it to be mentioned. It's an outstanding game. Tougher than many to get into initially, but well worth the effort.

Caverna: The Cave Farmers is all the rage right now, I can't visit my local game store or someone will mention it. And it is definitely a great game, though personally for me a little too similar to its spiritual predecessor which I've already played dozens of times. My personal pick would be Terra Mystica which I would describe as a eurogame that feels like ameritrash.

Great game! And Gamesurplus had some copies in stock a couple weeks ago. I assume they'll have some more soon.

Edit: Actually they have two copies in stock as of now

I have been enjoying Caverna but I haven't been impressed with most of the new Euros. I am waiting for someone to come up with something new.

Apart from what has already been mentioned, I think A Study in Emerald should be talked about a bit too. Definitely has some new stuff. Perhaps not in its mechanisms as much but the feel of it is quite different

As of May 2014, the Essen crop is already old.

My favorite Eurogames right now:

Splendor (My tip for the Spiel des Jahres)
Nauticus (My Favorite for Kennerspiel des Jahres)
Kashgar: Merchants of the Silk Road
Helios
Istanbul
Florenza: The Card Game

A big +1 for me. Hands down the best game of last year.

Also:
Bruxelles 1893 is fantastic
Rococo is great
I know Keyflower is a year older than the others I've named, but it's also really worth a look (especially with The Farmers expansion that came out last year)

My successes (not just what I think, but what other players have also thought) from Essen 2013 and later have been (not all equally successful, the order is alphabetical):

Concordia
Glass Road
Lewis and Clark
Nosferatu
Prosperity
Rokoko
Russian Railroads
A Study in Emerald

(One of those is clearly the odd one out. Think box size.)

If not on that list, it may be because I missed adding it. But it may be that it's one of the many games I haven't played. Or of course it might have failed. Or might be earlier than my start point.

Most euro games released in the past year have been horribly boring but I did find Keyflower to be an exception. What a refreshing take on the whole worker placement and auction genres. Add a touch of logistics and tons of replayability and there you go.
