In each suit, each type of unit, except the king and queen, has one card that is "shaded" or "hashed": The 1 (pawn), 10 (bishop), and one knight, and one rook. I'm assuming that's used to differentiate rank, perhaps implying that the "ace" is / can be the highest-ranked card in a suit. Is that what you had in mind?

In any event, I don't know how this flew under my radar, but I need to get a nice deck of these printed up! Do you already have files on ArtsCow, The Game Crafter, or some equivalent?

Right, solved these problems, after chatting with Daniel Wilcox, and doing a bit of work:
colonist Tricky Chess establishes a ranking for the cards. Of course, as with all other card deck game systems, each individual game can use different rankings (Euchre, anyone?).
