Curiously, the decloak specifically indicates the ship spends the token to come out of cloak 'immediately before revealing its maneuver dial'...

...does this mean a ship under the effects of an ion weapon hit (thus never 'reveals a maneuver dial') CANNOT decloak, if it's already cloaked?

Only 2 hull and shields, though, with only 2 (base) agility. It's rather a glass cannon - I'd say more vulnerable, generally, than a TIE Fighter...for 30 points!

Even when it cloaks, that only bumps the agility up to '4'...which any other TIE can get with a stealth device easily enough for half the price.

'Whisper', fully kitted out (32 + Advanced Cloaking: 4 + Sensor Jammer: 4 + VI: 1) comes to 41 points on his own...and you'll probably want to add some crew to him. Sure, he'll be basically rolling 4 defense dice with a free focus token against every attack, and the enemy really DOES need to focus when attacking him, but...with only 4 hull and shields combined...

It'll be a tricky ship to build around.

Wow, that news came unexpected (the E-Wing article is still quite new)... just the way an article about a cloaking craft should appear!

I think for me this and the Defender will be used primarily in a "defend the prototype" scenario I'll put together. I don't really see myself getting more than one of each, even though they are neat.

There is no reason to have two A's at the beginning of aardvark. I simply won't do it.

Still, the article makes me all excited for June!

I'm happy they're trying to shift the game towards higher pilot skills.

Swarms are neat, but I enjoy having people with names in the game. It's more fun to have named pilots for me anyway. Feels more thematic and less surgical.

Interesting, this one does not say TIE Phantom Only, like the other modification. Does this mean we'll be able to add cloaking devices to other ships?

Interesting article, though I'm not entirely sure I agree with their conclusions of how this alters the state of the game. An expensive, high power, single shot that relies mostly on avoidance for survival is generally the tool to use against other, singular, expensive targets. Generally speaking the counter is to throw more bodies at it, so when it kills one the rest can dogpile and take it out.

Sad this information is all self contained to the Phantom. Nothing really known to add to other ships.

Echo seems pretty cool but since we have Lorir we already have a feel for these tactics. It's nice they don't need a stress though to do it.

I'm sure it's just open so they can add cloaking to other ships down the road.

Rebel Aces' Keyan Farlander with an Autoblaster should do it, too.

I thought you could only take one modification.

How can you take the Advanced Cloaking Device and the Stygium Particle Accelerator?

You can't. You'll have to choose for the Tie Phantom.

Too bad the Emperor didn't have the foresight to use TIE Phantoms as his Royal Guard instead of TIE Interceptors...

I think you're looking at it backwards. Even if the Phantom is the only ship that will ever be able to cloak, there's no need to put "TIE Phantom only" on the Stygium Particle Accelerator because it has no effect if you put it on a ship that doesn't have the cloaking action. On the other hand, if Advanced Cloaking Device didn't say "TIE Phantom Only", you could put it on any ship and that ship would be able to take a free cloak action after it shoots... which they probably want to avoid for obvious reasons.

"What squad are you flying?"

"Han Solo + Gunner + Marksmanship + Advanced Cloaking Device."

I'm sure it's just open so they can add cloaking to other ships down the road.

I think that the other consideration is that Stygium Particle Accelerator requires you to already have the cloak action in order to fulfill the condition "When you either decloak or perform a cloak action...". So essentially, you need to have the cloak icon in the action bar, and so far that restricts who can use it to the Phantom.

Advanced Cloaking Device on the other hand, allows you to "...perform a free cloak action...", which does not require you to have the cloak action in your action bar; anybody would be able to utilize this if it was not restricted to the Phantom.

3x Shadow Squadron Pilot + Recon Specialist + Stygium Particle Accelerator

Only 12 hit points, but hear me out.

You approach in a tight formation cloaked (4 defense dice) and go straight for the centre of the opposing squad. On the turn when you engage, you decloak in your choice of direction ("Surprise!") with a 3-turn towards your enemy, flanking them, gaining an Evade and taking 2 Focus tokens. That's a Soontir/PtL amount of tokens without the stress, with a bigger gun (5 dice at Range 1!) and a HUGE barrel roll that probably got you out of most firing arcs, leaving your opponent guessing as to which side you were going to be attacking from. Sure, you only have 2 agility (with 3 tokens) on turns when you attack, but you have 4 agility + 2 Focus tokens (and maybe an Evade token) the rest of the time - and no stress. In the hands of a Sith master, these are going to be Wicket wicked.

Chewie + Gunner (+, say, VI or something)
Lando + Gunner (+, say, Determination and Nien Nunb or something)

Oh, you are flanking me? That's nice. And THREE tokens?? Wow, I certainly hope my gunner doesn't fall asleep...

Problem with the TIE Phantom is the same as the TIE Interceptor - it relies heavily on maneuver to survive, which means a 'pure' fleet of them will do quite poorly against double-YT-lists.

I can definitely see a pimped-out TIE Phantom being a keystone of an Imperial fleet, specifically for flanking non-YT-ships...but the CORE of the fleet has still got to be a TIE swarm. There just isn't any other particularly effective way of killing a dual-YT-list.

I have a question about the Stygium Particle Accelerator:
It states that when you decloak or perform a cloak action you get to perform a free evade action. Would you be able to get a free evade action for decloaking and recloaking in the same turn? If so these guys could be incredibly hard to hit. Echo, PTL, Stygium Particle Accelerator, Navigator could net you 4 green dice and 3 evades or 2 evades and a focus.

Yep, it looks like that's right. Nope, you can only get 1 Evade token this way per turn. With PtL and Stygium and Recon Specialist, you can only get 1 Evade token and 2 Focus tokens in the same turn (by taking, say, an Evade action and Pushing the LImit for a Focus action). Stygium Particle Accelerator gives you a free token Evade action, not a free action token, and you can't take the same action twice in a turn. Of course, if you decloak and cloak in the same turn (aside from using Advanced Cloaking Device), you can't shoot... so while you're unlikely go get hit, you aren't contributing to offense, either.
