I don't know any public sector employee that could get away with this. My friends in the private sector on the other hand...easily.

I assume you have never been to the DMV. Or the Post Office.

My mom is a social worker and works harder than anyone I know. For peanuts.

And then there are other jobs that to be quite honest are utter and complete jokes.

This sounds like every day for me. My job involves 5 minutes of furious typing, then waiting for lengthy computer things to happen in the background. BGG fills those spaces.

I used to have a job working the graveyard shift on helpdesk. It was for a rather small company, so I'm not sure why they felt they needed 24 hour helpdesk, I barely ever got any calls... but there I was. I also had to run some backups and swap some tapes, which took a grand total of about 5 minutes... I racked up some serious internet usage.

I love the uniquely American attitude that you are lazy unless you perform 12 hours of work within an 8 hour shift.

We're creating our own dystopia, folks.

Nobody said that. Employers just want to know where their money is going. Some employers agree to pay for hours of downtime. As long as they agree and are kept in the loop, no problem. It's possible that the OP just has such an employer.

90% of the private sector jobs I have had have said this (or rather, implied this). Bump that up to 100% for private sector jobs where you are paid salary.

If I clarified that in my original comment, the like ratio might be different from 51:3.

Trailing 50% behind me, and I posted way after you. Catch up!

In all seriousness, my comment wasn't directed at you (I didn't quote you, after all), it was more of a blanket statement.

Please tell me you're joking.

Whilst many, many jobs require serious thought and are very important, most of us probably spend huge amounts of time doing something that means very little to anyone but the company raking in huge amounts of money by having us work there. OK, this can be a dangerous assumption, but trust me when I say I work in a position where, honestly, I'm not doing anything important to the running of the World. As such I do my job, but enjoy every minute where I can get away with doing very little. This may be different if I earnt a high salary, but the directors spend most of their time away from the office or in 'meetings' so I'm not entirely convinced anyone in the office is doing their full quota.

I don't have free use of the Internet, even!
