Based on my research, it looks like Kemet would be the perfect game for my fledging gaming group. Except.......it plays up to five and I need to field six players.

Is there a game out there like Kemet for 5 players?

I don't know a game like Kemet for six.

What is it that makes Kemet perfect in your opinion?

i.e. what would be the important aspects for a game to recommend?

Cosmic Encounter + expansion might be the closest, but it's still not even close at all. CE has more of a social-intrigue thing going on that is not present in Kemet. And Kemet is all about the techs found in the game.

Struggle of Empires is an area-control game with battles and techs to personalize your armies that plays up to 7. When you spell it out that way, it sounds spot on. But the pace is off here. This is longer, and closer to an epic experience. Although when we're talking about conquest games and 6 players, you'll be hard pressed to find anything but a game with some length to it. If you can handle a longer play time, like 3-4 hours, I recommend this. It's one of Wallace's best, IMO.

You might want to try A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition). It's got a bit more room for negotiation, but it's a multiplayer conflict game with card combat that plays 6. Rex: Final Days of an Empire might be a good choice too.

Not perfect, but based on my experience with the group that I play with they'll love the fighting, purchasing tech and unit upgrades. Basically, formulating your own strategy tech wise as the game progresses. The ameratrash theme also helps since they're also video gamers.

Cosmic Encounter, REX and Game of Thrones are all on my short list. Which I'm sure they'll enjoy, but, I wanted to see what else was out there. Pretty sure Struggle of Empires would fly with this group.

Would fly with the group? Or wouldn't?

If you think it would, then run and get it. It's got exactly what you're saying with "tech and unit upgrades". It just doesn't have the "theme" that you find in the others listed.

Sorry, that should say 'wouldn't'. But then again, stranger things have happened.

A Game of Thrones or Eclipse although they are harder than Kemet.

If you can go further,

Twilight Imperium
Dominant Species
And Here I Stand / Virgin Queen
