So does that mean that together they mean 'like a Hu'? Or maybe 'mustache-y'? :-)

We should keep in mind that Chinese of 500 years in the future isn't exactly the same as Chinese of today, so it might not have a specific meaning for us now that works. We would have to look at Firefly stuff that has that character in it and also a translation. Or you might try contacting GF9.

That's certainly one argument that could be made.

Although, to be fair, most of the Chinese dialogue spoken in the show has actual meaning in today's Chinese language, so it stands to reason that the written letters would also be close to modern meanings, if not identical.

I suspect "beard" is the correct etymology. A bearded person in this future Chinese society is probably an individual who is older and wiser and, thus, more likely to negotiate. But that's just a guess.
