On this website review of Giganten (see "links"), Mr. Faidutti suggests this variation:

A small change in the rules that makes, I think, for a more tense game: when no player takes the red action card, the black train is moved forward only one space, no matter the number of spaces indicated on the card.

I haven't tried it that way, but can see how this could increase the tension. I'm a bit wary of extending the length of the game. But if I can get Giganten on the table more often, I'll try it and report here.

I just play my first game....more than 2 hours of play. I believe that it is necessary to shorten it.
I think that the more interesting variant would be, in that case, if nobody take the red card, the black is moved forward ONE MORE space that indicated in the card.

Yesterday I played with this variant: very good indeed.

The last rounds this is another point to take in account: to take or not the red card to accelerate or to slow down the game. If a need more rounds, probably I would choose another beige card...but because I need time, I must take the red card to avoid the black train advance one more box.

This is another variant that has worked well in 2-3 games we had.

If nobody picks a red card, the black train remains where it is. The red is shuffled back with the rest of the BEIGE cards available. Any player that takes any red card, advances the train accordingly.

It creates interesting dynamics, because it allows also the possibility at certain turns to have available 2 red cards (one red card that you draw each turn and one that you may draw from the beige cards). Sometimes, it lengthens the game, sometimes it does not. The players have some control over the length of the game this way.
