A relative recently gave us a Tic-Tac-Toe board from overseas. It's hand-carved and painted wood with parrots and lizards for pieces. Physically speaking, it's a lovely game. But...it's Tic-Tac-Toe.

Are there any other games to play on a 3x3 grid with 8 pieces that are actually worth playing?

Not purely on a 3 x 3. If you were open to adding additional markings to make more grids or some other required lines it would possibly open up a few other options. That's assuming the board is large enough to be worth while doing that for the other games.

Strip Tic-Tac-Toe, the drinking game?

Put a shot glass with different drinks on each spot. To take a spot, you drink the shot. Loser of a game takes something off. Tie? You both lose something.

First person to pass out naked is the loser (winner?).

Hang it on a wall and use it for darts. Might mess up the board though.

No sure how big board/pieces are, but you might be able to play on the points of the 3x3 grid, thus making a 4x4 grid. Large list of 4x4 games too.
