So I am very glad I caved and got myself a copy of RoboRally. I had read lots about it and was always worried about the randomness of it. Turned out that, when it can to the number of card types, there weren't very many so its "randomness" was not as bad as I was assuming.

But I digress.

After playing two games, I ventured further into my Avalon Hill rule book and noted that some suggested board setups require "additional" boards that did not come with my set (or are printed on the back of other boards also required for the map)

My question is simple: how do I get these other boards? I can't find any Avalon Hill board expansions. Do I have to buy two of the same game? I could print out my own but that never feels complete to me.

So where do I get them??

Sounds like what you have is the 3rd edition. There were two previous editions, a European edition, and four expansions, and that's where different boards come from. There are also websites where fans of the game have created additional boards of their own imagining, and where you could do the same.

If you go to the BGG page for Roborally and down to the More Info section, there's a complete list of all the official boards and which version(s) of the game or expansion(s) they were released with. This stuff is out of print, but certainly still available in the secondary market (BGG marketplace, ebay, etc.).

Sadly, none of the expansions have ever been reissued.

I thought I read somewhere, could be wrong or this may evidence it's true, that one edition gives lay out of boards but does not contain the boards, or the same board may have the other side in the display but is unavailable because you are using the other side.

But yeah you can make boards, fairly easy, You can print a board and just laminate it with thick lamination, and your good to go!

Some of my own board designs are out in the wild to be downloaded.

The boards I created:

My personal favorite, which is an expansion to an expansion, a homebrew board for the Grand Prix expansion:

Wet & Wild

My friends and I like to do race games sometimes, and while we love the Race boards in the official Grand Prix boards, I wanted to add or change the race, and this board connects seamlessly with those official boards.

It's my best work.

Another favorite way to play RoboRally amongst me and my friends is "Cage Match". No flags, last one alive wins.

So I created a Cage Match board:

Why is there no Word Games Forum or Subdomain?

There should be a Word Games Subdomain, or at least a Word Games Forum!

The only reason you can't play some of the setups in the back of the 3rd edition rulebook is because they screwed up. They gave sample race courses that use both sides of the same board. If they had put a tad more effort in, they could have paired up the opposite sides so that all the sample courses could be done with just the one set. Or if they had proofread more carefully, they could have seen their mistake and included some different sample tracks that didn't have this problem.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter. You don't have to use the setups given in the rulebook. You can make up your own.
