I have a job with a lot of downtime. So, I'm looking for an android app to play on my phone that doesn't need an internet or data connection while playing. It doesn't have to be an actual boardgame, but I'm not looking for an arcade style or realtime game.

What I like:

Condado (fan-made version of San Juan)
Androminion (fan-made version of Dominion)
Backgammon NJ (great A.I.)

What I don't like and why:

Catan - AI is too stupid
Carcasonne - just don't love the actual game.
Hive - I don't like this style of abstract. I'm not much of a fan of checkers or chess either.
Hey, That's My Fish - doesn't offer enough variety.

Requirements:

Must be playable on a phone. (Ticket to Ride, for example, seems like it would need a larger screen.)
Playable Offline
Smart A.I.
Must be able to pause/save the game so I don't lose progress when I need to actually work.

Bonus if it's available in the Amazon appstore or downloadable from a third party site so that I can also play on Kindle Fire.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Just went live today on Android.

What do you dislike about Hive? I like Everlands HD but it is Hive-like.
Check out Tigris and Euphraties
Talisman
Condado
Labyrinth
Uniwar

Can recommend more if you need!

Thanks for all the suggestions! I just downloaded Summoner Wars and I'm looking into the others.

I think Hive is a neat game. I think it's that I prefer strategic thinking to spacial reasoning if that makes any sense.

I've been enjoying Kingdom Builder on my Nexus 7. I assume it would work ok on a phone too.

I play a fair bit of of Elder Sign too, I also play Mahjong (not the solitaire version) called "Mahjong & Friends".

I've recently played a bit of Sky Hiking, which is a version of Cloud 9 and Hoplite which is a little hex roguelike game I enjoy.

I'm watching this thread for suggestions - some great ones so far, thank you

Expansions, though not all of them, are available for TtR on Android. The 1910 Expansion, Europe, Switzerland, and Asia I believe. Also, the concern about your screen size is valid, but I find that I can see the pieces well enough on my phone (4.7" screen) and haven't placed things in the wrong spot because of that. I don't know if it would be a good fit for you though since the A.I. is usually pretty easy to beat.

+1 for Elder Sign, just got it last week and I'm loving it.

If during your downtime you're allowed headphones, I'd highly recommend listening to audiobooks as well. I've killed a lot of time (though not at work) listening to a book and playing boring ol' Klondike solitaire on my phone.

How are the A.I.'s in Kingdom Builder and Alhambra?

Coincidentally, in case anybody reading this thread missed it, someone posted a way to get any app free on Amazon in the Hot Deals forum today:

I find the AI in Kingdom Builder to be fine although it is possible I just suck. They don't do anything that is obviously stupid and sometimes they will block me in a way that seems deliberate.

I almost always play three player with the medium and hard AI and I win a bit under half the time. The Hard AI consistently, but not always, does better than the Medium.

Alhambra is quite fun to play against the AI but I'm not sure if I would say they are good or not. They seem to do nonsensical things quite often.
