> Excerpt from the May 15, 2014 Washington Post blog entry by Alexandra Petri entitled:

The Top Thirteen Lines of the Surreal, Magical Idaho GOP Gubernatorial Primary Debate

Stop everything you’re doing and watch this. Close all your browser tabs. This debate is the greatest thing to happen since sliced bread. Move over, Jimmy “The Rent Is Too Damn High” McMillan. America, say hi to Harley Brown and Walt Bayes.

This debate is incredible.

It is everything that you ever wanted and more.

This debate, held Wednesday (May 14th) among the four candidates for the Republican nomination for Idaho governor, reminds me of the political application of the old Jean Kerr line that “the real menace in dealing with a 5-year-old is that in no time at all you too begin to sound like a 5-year-old yourself.”

Here are some of the highlights:

13) Walt Bayes: “I honestly think half of the Republican Party is Democrats, and half of the Democratic Party is Communists.”

12) Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter (Republican): ”It’s a great idea to get back all our land, and I wish them well, but I just don’t think it’s going to happen.”

11) Harley Brown: “Taxes are a drag. I don’t even like to think about it.”

10) Harley Brown: “I’ve got a master’s degree in raising hell.”

9) Gov. Otter, explaining the difficulty with health-care exchanges: “We didn’t learn from the wolf episode.”

8) Walt Bayes: “I did kill a wolf, when it was still an endangered species.”

7) Brown: “Belay that.”

6) Bayes, who wants “to take Idaho back from the federal government”: “We’re wasting all kinds of wood out there.”

5) Brown: “I’m a modest guy, but I’m gonna say, I’m a great leader.”

4) Brown: “We bikers are cop magnets, like a Playboy bunny with a miniskirt gets hit on all the time.”

3) Bayes, asked if he could govern: “They told me we couldn’t home-school. I prayed about it. I stood on my hind legs like a man. I told ‘em what I thought of ‘em, and the television would talk to me for thirty minutes or an hour: Well what would you do if they came out to take your kids? Well, you’d shoot ‘em. What else would you do? I can stand up when these guys are falling down.”

2) Brown: As a taxi driver, he said, “I’ve picked up my fair share of the gay community. And they have true love for one another. I’m telling you, they love each other more than I love my motorcycle.”

1) Brown: “I don’t like political correctness! Can I say this? It sucks! … I’m about as politically correct as your proverbial turd in a punchbowl. And I’m proud of it. And I’m going for it.”

Even Gov. Otter, the straight man in this debate, has one unique resume item: a cameo in what he later discovered was a soft-core porn film!

________________________________________________________

And surprise! Surprise! Gov. Otter himself was responsible for inviting those two fringe candidates to the debate. Reason: He wanted to reduce the speakers' time among four debaters (versus two) so he wouldn't have to debate his main Tea Party opponent so much.

Two standard politicians, a refuge from ZZ top and the only gay in the village, what a choice (who seemed to be ignored by the real politicians).

I think I can see which two candidates will win the nomination.

So the burning question: who will Tripp vote for, if any of them? I'm guessing none of the above.

I don't watch debates. Otter has been a decent governor. as the economy, jobs picture and overall general health and outlook of Idaho shows. He's not perfect and I don't agree with everything he stands for, but he's okay. Back in the day he was a Wrangler-wearing, two-stepping, horse-breaking hell raiser and was well known around the area as a ladies man and trouble-maker at the saloons.

Fulcher is a new face and I'll read up on him. He seems slightly far right but that's an impression from the scriptwriters and Otter supporters in the local media. Who knows?

I've never heard of the guy who has the Santa beard

Harley has been around forever. This isn't his first attempt to get on the ballot. Every state has a Harley Brown. So does every political faction. I think they mean well and I honestly don't believe they'd be substantially worse in office than any current governor of any state in the union. Harley would certainly be an improvement for massive clusterfuck states like Illinois.

Quite a few of my local friends enjoyed the show and one guy who used to work for me at the store is the IT manager for the Public TV channel that held the debates and he says all four of the candidates were lots of fun.

Otter will win. Wranglers. Ranch. MILF wife. Ex-Simplot son-in-law. He's fast-tracked and the only people who hate him are the local gay mafia and the extreme wing-nuts on the Left and Right. the other 95% of Idahoans are pretty optimistic right now.

*edit*

Seriously, with one of the nation's lowest unemployment rates, a conservative majority, a rodeo in virtually every town with a population over 100 people, an achingly beautiful landscape, a growing high tech and service industry, an urban sophistican and culture that truly shocks snotty Portlanders, New Yorkers and Bay Area Hipsters when they first experience it, and a blue football field... how does a guy who looks like Ronald Reagan's illegitimate son not get reelected?

Hell, the only reason James likes James is because liking James is part of the "being James" package.

Partisanship aside, that's pretty wonderfully goofy though. I imagine the 2 normal politician guys constantly glancing over at each other with that 'who are these clowns?' look in their eyes.

Nay, one of them -- the current Idaho governor -- was faking it because *he himself* was responsible for purposefully inviting the other two clowns to participate in order to take up more air time and so he wouldn't have to debate his more serious Tea Party opponent who, ironically enough, wasn't quoted as having made any overtly ridiculous or outrageous comments.

I had the songify of that and of Vernon Supreme on loop for a while, that's also hilarious and wonderful.

Both the Rent is too Damn High party guy and the Gubernatorial Biker are totally postworthy.

If people know stuff this funny from the left, why aren't they posting it?

Personally? Because ...
Poll: Why DON'T I post negative things about the left?
There's GOT to be a reason!
Why don't I post negative things about what is typically referred to as the left?
Because they wouldn't get it
Because I am too lazy
Because there are just sooo many examples, I can't decide on a good highlight
Because I don't care that much
Because ALL politicians are crooks and none should be safe
Because why bother?
Because I don't want that much hate mail
Because I don't have time to ignore all of the vitriolic follow-on posting
Because they wouldn't get it

I'm just continually amazed at how totally devoid of anything even approaching knowledge you are... and I don't even want to touch how unaware of your own personal motivations, emotions and character you must be.

But despite all that, your word volume and bandwidth usage in RSP is unparalleled. You're like a river Shreve... a raging, wide, unstoppable river of shit and cluelessness. Kudos.

You gotta admit, that is crafty!

Try and divide the weirdo vote into smaller slices of pie. Seems a perfectly viable strategy to me.

It's honestly pretty brilliant, although he does take a credibility hit too in the process... but that might be only outside of idaho, so who cares?

Yeah, well... I doubt it. But it makes for good yellow journalism. I don't see Otter as being at risk. He's electable and his track record is decent to really good about the things that matter. The story about him "needing to look good" is probably a concoction of the liberal base here in Boise - which is comprised almost exclusively of the newspaper and other print media professionals, the art community and the small but very, very, very annoyingly vocal Gay Mafia... a number of who work in print media and are players in the art community.

So they have their own tale to tell and that small percentage is pissed that Otter doesn't want Gay Marriage here. That's it. Gay Marriage. It's a one-issue liberal community due to all of them having great jobs, inexpensive housing, terrific educations, pristine streets and parks, lots of pro-bicycle advocates in the community at large, top musical talent at the many fine venues, easy air connections to every major US city and most of the world and close to the lowest electricity rates in America.

The list goes on.

Idaho is very hard to fuck up for any governor. We've had two Democrats since I've been here for a total of 19 of the 33 years I've lived here and they did fine. Just like the republican governors. So basically Otter is at risk if every gay marriage voter and every college student wants to trade him in for someone who also won't be able to fuck this place up and they can convince the remarkably content 90% who like Otter to hate him.

I personally don't care. Unlike California, New York or Illinois, we have managed to keep our statehouse from becoming a criminal conspiracy.
