My friends and I are playing Nations with the following rules:
- Each time you win, you advance your level.
- If you win on the Emperor level, you win the campaign.

Does anyone else play this game like this?

I would suggest not.

Very clever idea, by the way.

Is it possible not even to win, but to play on the emperor?

Recently I've played twice on the King level, while the rest players were either on Prince/Chiftain level and I completely lost.

One level difference is ok if you are slightly better than the others. Two will be difficult if you are learning together and only won by a small margin in the first game. Three is really hard, even as an expert playing against new players.

If you play with one level difference you can all together switch up and down (so one playing emperor and the others king, or one playing prince with the others on chieftain) to vary the game.

For reference from the main Nations page:

Campaign
Play a series of games.
All players start the first game on Prince.
Each time you win, you increase your difficulty (Prince->King, King->Emperor).
If you win on the Emperor level, you win the campaign.

It IS incredibly hard. Since I've won three times, I'm playing at Emperor level now. Well, a couple of weeks ago, I played at Emperor level against two players (who had played before) at Chieftain level. So I was three difficulty levels away from the other two players.

The result? It was so difficult that it stripped the game of all possible fun. So I suggested to Gustavo that we amend our original concept: no matter what your level is, you can't be more than one level away from another player. In other words, I would have played my game at the Prince level. But had I won, I wouldn't have won a campaign, because I wasn't playing at my level (i.e. Emperor).

Gustavo insists that the campaign system should only be used within the same group of players. But that means you have to track multiple levels, depending on whom you play each game againts. This is crazy.
I insist that your level sticks with you, no matter whom you play.

So next time I play Nations, I'm playing at Emperor level again -- unless nobody's playing at King level (as per the above modification to the system).

We play with the following:
- Everybody may choose to play a level higher then their previous playlevel
- The previous winner _must_ play a level higher
- The previous player on the last spot may choose to drop a level.
