Hi BGG land

Looking to get some more games for my collection, I like to play 2 player games but I'm open to games that support more than that as well.

Everytime I get a new game it seems to be a Card game. Now I love card games but my collection is flooded now and I even have some on my wish list.

Also don't want pure dice games either as I have Dragon Slayer(Kickstarter) and Martian Dice on the way.

What other mechanics are there to suit my needs.

Any recommendations appreciated.

BattleLore (Second Edition)Is a 2 player only game based on the Command and Colors system. Its basically a light war game with a fantasy theme. There are also other implemantations of this system if the theme isn't for you. Memoir '44, Commands & Colors: Ancients, Battles of Westeros.

Also if your looking for a light war game, 1775: Rebellion

Last Will is card driven and can range up to 5 players if I remember right but works well with 2.

Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small is a 2 player only worker placement

Theseus: The Dark Orbit goes up to 4 players but I find works best with 2.

Suburbia and Carcassonneare both tile placement games and both work well with 2.

Any specifics on what you are looking for? Play time? Theme interests? Any mechanics you want to try?

I'm having fun with Baldrick's Tomb it's something of a cross rougelike and minesweeper

Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs. X-Men and it's sister game Quarriors! are also a good fix.

Tsuro of the Seas has scratched an itch or two as well.

Open to many themes.
Mechanics, maybe tile laying but not Carcassone.
Playtime up to 60mins.
Not expensive, as games in my country are usually heavily inflated on price.

Since you already have Mr. Jack.

Mr. Jack Pocket (it is different)
Dracula (another deductive game)
Castles of Burgundy (can play up to 4 - sorta has tiles-laying)
Indigo (can play to 4 - definitely has tile-laying)
Star Trek Fleet Captains (expensive, flimsy components, awesome game especially if you like Star Trek)

and every co-op known to man.

My first two suggestions would be Glen More or Vikings, but both are almost impossible to get hold of. I believe Vikings will be re-printed soon.

For relatively inexpensive games currently available in NZ, I would have a look at:

Havana
Palazzo

I haven't played either but like the sound of:

Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small
And
Targi gets some very good reviews.

For solid Euro games that play well with two players then I would recommend both Bruges and The Castles of Burgundy. Also Stone Age. With these ones you are probably looking at $70 or $80 at least though.

Get Hive. Get it now. I weep at how long it took me to get around to trying it. No board, you just lay the pieces down on a table or the ground or the bottom of a pool or wherever. They are made of the same stuff that dominoes are. Takes about 15-20 mins to play. No randomness, but you don't even notice that after the first couple of plays. Goes for about $20USD on most online sites, but you may be able to find one/order one from your FLGS.

Get it.

My husband and I really enjoy playing Legends of Andor together. We've played it with 3 people too, but really enjoy it as a 2 player game.

1. Stronghold: It's a simple concept. Attacker tries to get into the stronghold, defender tries to prevent that. I've heard at least one person say this is their favorite two-player game in the world.

2. Any of the Pocket Battles series. They're quick little war games that scratch the army building and war game itch.

3. If you're up for collecting, Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game is a great game. The tactics and maneuvering make this game play differently than anything else I have.

While they're card-based, they are not card games, so I would highly recommend Twilight Struggle or any of the other CDG war games from GMT. TS is intense. Every decision is agonizing. I love it.

Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars, where you will be forced to drift aimlessly farther into the vast, empty abyss of space until a lack of food, water and oxygen causes you to succumb to Death's cold embrace.

Someone who wasn't Andy Hopwood mentioned Mijnlieff! Impressed. I've played that once, and beat him at it. I retired undefeated against the designer!

Thanks for all the feedback gives me lots to look at now

As some people have mention Hive, I own the Hive Pocket and I do enjoy it heaps. That's the kind of difference I'm looking for (no board, hex bits, no dice rolling, no cards) although I do like those mechanics.

I'll look through the suggestions.

Tsuro seems to hit all the marks I'm looking for, interesting concept.

Ohhh... Tsuro has a board, square bits, (Tsuro of the sea) dice rolling for "ai" dragon movement, no cards... 1 out of 4 isn't bad... rightwhistle

and I suggest going straight for "Tsuro of the Sea" it's a more expanded game. It's like Tsuro+.

Walnut Grove! It's a great 2p (up to 4) game that has tile laying as part of it (but definitely not like Carc!). About 30 minutes. I hope it's available in your country.

Non-card games my lady and I enjoy:

Carcassonne - with an expansion or 7. This game really grew on me.

YINSH - if your ok with abstracts.

Dungeon Twister 2: Prison - may be hard to find. But great 2 player board game if you like pure strategy.

Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation - fun small game.

Cube Quest - man is this flicking game fun. It's a dexterity game.

Ok, how about....
DaVinci's Challenge - Nice looking game, nice bits, interesting play

Or maybe...
Ingenious - tile placement of a sort, abstract strategy, quick and fun

If you're open to going with a vintage game... Kimbo
A 2-4 player game which uses dice but remains interesting and a challenge.
My wife and I much enjoy playing this one and you could probably get a copy on eBay for a pretty reasonable price.
