This past year I got a bee up my bonnet to play all the SDJ winners. And currently I have a big game order in with Gamesurplus and I'm thinking about putting the order on hold until the 2014 winner is announced in July.

However, I haven't had much practice tracking the Germany-USA pipeline. So I thought I'd ask here. So after the winner is announced, how long does it typically take to get widespread USA release? And am I correct that if I purchase the game immediately after the announcement as an import I could expect to pay $10 to $15 premium over the eventual US price?

Two of the three nominated games are already in general US release.

Well a couple of the expected nominees/winners are already available at many retailors, such as Splendor and Steam Park.

It looks like they're currently backordered at Gamesurplus, but they're available at Amazon. Here are the Gamesurplus links. I don't know what the current situation is for new stock on these games, but since they already have US releases, I would think they're going to try to have a new printing ready in time for SDJ

I didn't see that the SDJ nominees had been announced yet.

In looking at the actual nominees http://www.spieldesjahres.de/cms/front_content.php?idart=136..., Splendor still stands (and should win). Concepthas a U.S. release, but is currently backordered

Meanwhile the other nominee, Camel Up, isn't listed on Amazon or CSI, but Gamesurplus says it's waiting for a restock from the distributor, which implies they expect to get it soon.

Thanks! I guess the question is that I'm not planning to buy anything till the winner is announced...do you think it will be a long wait to get the games in the US retail post-anouncement?

I guess I should as thor =)

It all depends on how they're printings are timed. Since these games have already been released in the U.S., this won't be a case of waiting for a U.S. publisher to pick it up and release it in the states, but there's a chance these games will still be sold out and pending another printing by the time the SDJ is announced. You're just going to have to hope the companies involved are working on plans to handle the spike in demand that will result from an SDJ win.
