For those who are unable to attend the scheduled events, or for games which do not have any events posted, what is the best way you have found to find the games you want to play when attending the Con? Walking around is the obvious response, but does anyone utilize social media to find off-grid gaming? Other modes perhaps?

The board game room (forget the official wording for it) is pretty cool. You pay some generics to go play anything from the inventory. I knew some friends did it last year but we didn't do it. I can't remember if they have people in there to help teach games or if you have to read the rules your self.

There will be some folks volunteering in the game library (I'll be one of them) who may be able to teach games depending on what you're looking to play.

Agree with Christy here.
The open board game room is the way to go for having a spot to play.
In the events calendar, I think it is called the "Pick up and Play" room.
And...we can help you learn a game if you get stuck.

The Gen Con library is in the same room and makes it easy to find a game to play without lugging everything with you throughout the convention.
Downside is that it does cost money to get into the room.
Think it is $12 per day (split into two shifts - morning and evening)
Check the "events" section over on the website to make sure.

Again, pick the event tickets themselves and don't go for generics if you can help it. If the room sells out at a particular point, only the specific event tickets guarantee you a spot in the room.
If Christy or I can help you with anything else, don't hesitate to let us know.
See you there.

I had a guide, a Bedouin man, who called me 'Abu el Banat'. And whenever we'd meet another Bedouin, he'd introduce me as Abu el Banat. And the Bedouin would laugh and laugh and offer me a Pint of beer. (cont below)

And I'd go to pay them for the beer and they wouldn't let me. "Abu el Banat" means "father of daughters." They thought the beer was the least they could do.

Is there a difference between the "board game room" and the "Game Library"?

They share the same room.
So, if you get a ticket to the Library, that is also the Pick up and Play room.

Would I be watching for game title tags or is there a blanket tag that covers all (well, most) open and waiting games?

I think it was #genconopengames but it was for all games, no separate tags for RPGs, board games etc.

To be honest I go with a group of about 20-30 people and we use Google Hangouts as our system. Its great because it pops right up on my smartphone and it's a closed loop. I know I'm only going to get requests from my buddies aka like minded game players.

Check out the Days of Wonder room. Lots of free games and sometimes free food.

Indie games had a room for the first time last year. I played a lot of Coup there.

The Days Of Wonder room rocks, I have eaten there numerous times and it is always top notch, I went out of my way some years when I was on a budget to try and score some good food, usually worked out well for me.

The big companies demo rooms are usually pretty cool to check out. I like wondering around up stairs just to see all the role players - well one time anyway.

If I'm going to role play it's going to be in a hot tub with the Japanese Women's Swim team.

I like the way you think. "German beer garden girls" would also have been accepted.

Exhibit Hall: Huge area where stuff is sold and demos are done.

Board Game Hall: Scheduled events, company demos, some companies have their own rooms (Mayfair, Rio Grande).

Game Library and Pick-up Play Area: Open board gaming using the game library, or any other games you want to bring in. Ticketed in time blocks.

Look for a blue police box. I heard it's bigger on the inside.

Honestly, I have no idea. I didn't even know there was one until now.
