Whew! All done with the data entry, formatting, and general error checking.

This post is related to the Midpoint Character Snapshot posts that Mike requested a bit ago both here and over at Paizo.

Mike's original 2 posts:
BGG Post: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1114332/snapshot-of-your...
Paizo Post: http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2qmqz?We-Need-a-Snapshot-of-Your...

Here is an issues post I made of a few things I noticed while working on compiling the data:
BGG Post: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1172102/issues-while-com...
Paizo Post: http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2r1ha?Issues-While-Compiling-Mid...

Here's the link to the original data and the formatted data I'll be using to get some statistics:

Original: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cNOl-RZVz5O3itJbK1Gt08mL...
Formatted: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WWYKKRp569ayBG9SUSQk...

I'll be following up on the next post as I do some data analysis. It may not be pretty and graphical, but it'll be here.

To the statisticians out there, feel free to add your own analyses if you'd like, as I'll mostly just be doing basic stuffs, mostly percentages, averages, mosts, and leasts.

Sadly, the Google Spreadsheet graphs are clunky, or it'd make life so much easier.

Power Feats %s
(This is the power feat data for entries without issues)
(Please note that the %s for these sets of data are different from those
above, as the data doesn't correspond to the total number of power
feats, but instead to the number of characters that chose certain
feats. This was done because a character is limited by certain
prerequisites, such as he/she cannot choose a second base feat without
having chosen a first base feat, and the same goes for a third or
fourth; this also counts for the specific data in that a character
cannot choose the second power feat in a group without having chosen the
first, etc)

Totals:
1259 Power Feats Chosen:

319 100.00% Characters chose a first Base Power
319 100.00% Characters chose a second Base Power
309 96.87% Characters chose a third Base Power
7 2.19% Characters chose a fourth Base Power
305 95.61% Characters chose a first Role power

302 94.67% Characters had all 4 Power Feats
17 5.33% Characters had only 3 Power Feats

319 100.00% Characters had at least 3 Power Feats
302 94.67% Characters had at least 4 Power Feats

Extra:
Of the 17 characters with only 3 Power Feats,
10(58.82%) chose a role power and 7(41.18) did not
Of the 302 characters with only 4 Power Feats,
295(97.68%) chose a role power and 7(2.32%) did not

I added links to the original midpoint posts as well as an additional set of posts I made regarding the data while I was working on it.

Nice work! This must have taken you a lot of time.

I'd be very interested to see the skill feats by character. I haven't progressed very far yet, but I'm curious to see what others are doing.

It seems that the joy of having Seoni sacrifice allies to a dark god is underrated. I'm surprised that more people took Lini's Shapeshifter role (only useful for adding fire to attacks) than Abyssal Sorcerer.

I think one factor is that at the point you choose you don't really know how useful some powers will be (assuming you didn't have deck 4+ yet). Valeros' Guardian role, Ezren's Evoker role, even Lini's Shapeshifter animal ally acquisition power are hard to judge the usefulness at the time you choose a role because you don't know how many cards those powers will effect.

Other powers, like Harsk recharging ranged weapons or Seelah's healing power are much easier to see usefulness from based on the cards you have in the box at the end of deck 3.

It also depends on your party composition. Speaking as someone who has just started adventure 2...As Kyra, if I were in a large party, or in a 2-hero party with a weakling, I would lean toward the Healer specialization. But in a party of 2 with Valeros, the exorcist is looking better. EDIT: Or maybe in a large party, we would have to split up so much that healing wouldn't be useful. I don't know, since I haven't experienced a large party.

It also wasn't clear how many undead we were going to face, so Kyra's power against them was a question mark. (And I'm still not sure how valuable the +1 would be.)

I assume the role is for people who put all their feats in Strength or Dexterity instead of Wisdom for combat spells. They still should have at least d10+d4+4 on Survival rolls by then, so the acquisition power doesn't seem too useful. If only Charmed Red Dragons were animals.

Harsks split was the most even!

I'm still debating which to choose once we're through hook mountain (2? more adventures in the scenario if I remember right), but I'm leaning towards tracker. In a group of 5, the extra explores with recharge of animal allies seems much better than recharging weapons instead of discarding them. I've been putting all my recent card feats into more allies to make sure I can have as many animal allies for extra explores as possible.

Harsk was a tough one for me too. I chose Sniper because Lini is in the group and I didn't want to compete for the best animals. Also, with recharge on ranged weapons he can use his power and a bow to give some serious assistance to combat at another location.

I'm surprised Sajan is so even. Not because I don't think they are great, but because I thought I remembered someone saying everyone who had posted was taking Drunken Master.

Also sad to see Amiri is the least represented. I too was at first turned off by the cost of her burying a card, but my wife has been playing her and she has been so valuable to our group. And both her bury power and her movement power have been awesome. We love it when the mountain peak shows up.

Our group seems to hit pretty hard, so the recharge for 1d4+3 normally helps enough, and I don't even try and compete for 'good' animals, I just make sure they have a 'may also be discarded for explore'. I figure this way I can churn them for explores, and not have to worry as much when I use my blessings to help with combat instead of exploring. Also, I've found that my weapons are becoming less and less useful for other locations. I've got 2 poisoned daggers, and a return throwing axe, so only 1/2 of my 6 weapons can help other locations.

I added character and role breakdowns of skill feat selections.

Can you all give me some feedback on how it looks on your screen? On mine, it looks fine and doesn't wrap, but I don't know if it'll look that way for everyone.

If it's too wide, I can move the %s so that they're under the values (thus making the table taller but less wide).

The 'everyone does ___' or 'everyone uses ___' is one of the reasons I wanted to do this, so people could at least see a breakdown of reported character. Of course, it doesn't count characters that -didn't- get reported, but meh, it's what we have to work with, lol.

My personal opinion is that people see Amiri and her powers, and decide that having just one good power isn't worth using a character. Most of the people in my gaming group said her movement power just wasn't worth it. I think it's nifty to be able to move yourself or someone else, and it can be quite handy at times, but it doesn't really go into that 'super useful' territory until late-campaign, where some of the locations hurt you if you're there at the end of your turn, or late-game, when the timer is running down and you close a location and want to move elsewhere to be a backup for villain slaying on someone else's turn.

That being said, I'm usually good at finding the bright side of things, and I know everything has a use at some point or another.

As far as statistics go, Amiri's selection, while the furthest out, is not actually far enough out to even be considered a minor outlier. It's within the statistical boundary of acceptance.

I honestly think it'd be interesting to find how character, role, and feat selection changes, if at all, after the entire adventure path is done and players replay it knowing what they're going to come across and having a general idea what works and what doesn't for their particular group and playstyle.

Sadly, though, S&S will be out shortly thereafter, so I doubt we'd get enough data.

Did you get data from that one? That would give you a bit more info. (Though I apologize for basically asking you to do more work.)

From the looks of it, they averaged 1 point in Strength and 0 in Dexterity. My mind boggles. I look forward to seeing more statistics about these strange characters.

I went back and added in the information to the character and role choices from just those characters that are used for the other data.

I realized from the post above that people were using the data that included issue characters in combination with the data that was using only those characters without issues, causing some calculation skewing, and that was an error in my information presentation. I apologize.

---------

Concerning that and the post, the difference between 9/9 and 9/6 in calculation isn't much of a difference for this specific circumstance (an average of 1 compared to an average of 1.5), so your statement still fits.

But, as can be seen, the difference from the spread is still quite significant; there's a 19% increase (almost double) in Strength choice for those choosing Shapeshifter instead of Wild Warden.

I've never been much of a reddit checker, so I didn't know that post existed there when collecting and compiling the data, so I'm afraid it's not included.

It's possible I may go back and add it in later (as well as any characters that were added to the BGG/Paizo threads after my collection date), but for right now, I'm working on the information I have already.

1.5; I see several +2 Strengths and one character that exceeds my expectations in many ways.

Thanks for the corrections.

This got me thinking today: What character do you think MAKES you want to diversify their skill feats the most? I'm thinking its Valeros. Putting feats in Strength is obvious, since Dexterity helps with so many barriers his d8 die makes it worth it, and his Diplomacy skill makes you want to add to Charisma. And then I looked at this data and, lo and behold, he's the only one with 3 different skills getting into double digit percentages for choices.

Wow, no clue how that 1.16 got there, should have been 1.5 as you pointed out. I typed it, but I think I had a braintoot. I fixed my post so it doesn't throw others off, just in case.

What kind of surprised me was that almost as many choices were made in Charisma as there were in Dexterity, so the fighter actually has a side job as a negotiator!

Based on the skill feat choices, it appears that Kyra and Seelah are the two characters that are most evenly split between two different skills as opposed to having one major primary one (though Seelah still favors Strength, but not by much, when compared to the other characters with primary skills).

Even more surprising: Acrobat Merisiel is getting more Charisma feats than Thief Merisiel, even though Thief Merisiel has a Charisma based power. My wife is Acrobat Merisiel, so is there something about Thief Merisiel that I'm not thinking of that would explain that?

I have a general theory about character growth that might explain it, at least in part. It goes something like this:

Character progression is a predictive act; you take what you know and guess about the future; for many people it's also an emotional act - it's about what they want that future to feel like.

Some people think of the bad things that happened more strongly than the good things (perhaps because they really dislike the bad things, or the bad things just happened and are more fresh in the mind, or because their group is talking about the bad things, or a host of other reasons). People in this group often make choices about cards and feats aimed at preventing those bad events or others like them. I call this "shoring up the weak spots" or simply "avoiding badness".

Spoiler (click to reveal)
For example, when we ran the full marathon of all six adventures at last year's BGG.Con, I noticed that two of Merisiel's first three skill feats were in Charisma.

Other people think of the good, successful things that happened, for the same sorts of reasons (more recent, group talking about them, general inclination, etc). People in this group often make choices aimed at increasing the likelihood of these good things happening, either by making really good things better or by making more things really good. (I'm pretty solidly in this camp, so my description is a little more fuzzy - to me it "just seems right" unless I give it the serious analytical eye.) I call this "enhancing the positive" or simply "being more awesome".

There's a natural split between these groups (and also fluidity - some games teach you to prefer one or the other. We'll talk more about this as Skull & Shackles approaches), and I think it's relatively even.

So, then, if it's even, why does Merisiel end up with Charisma bumps? Because (my theory goes), Merisiel is especially (but not only!) attractive to the first camp. Her large list of skills, solo-combat ability, and especially her near-perfect ability to evade trouble means that she starts ahead of the game in the "avoiding badness" arena.

For Merisiel, in Rise of the Runelords, the most common "bad things" that people were seeing for Merisiel were "needing to close locations" and "wanting to acquire cool allies". Charisma bumps contribute strongly to the second and help with the first. Remember that Merisiel is already pretty good at combat (unless she's forced into a bad situation, and it's hard to force Merisiel into situations) and dealing with many barriers.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
This is also the guess that I got from the players at BGG.Con - that she wanted to acquire some allies and failed the rolls. That's just one small set of anecdotes, but it comes from a group that likes to analyze.

This is all a theory (based on a theory, based on...), but it's one that's worked so far.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the insight Chad. I'd never stepped outside myself to think about it that much, and it is quite interesting.

But I'm still a bit curious why Thief Merisiel is seeing less Charisma bumps then Acrobat Merisiel. (Granted, it is still a small population set.)

So, taking your insight and applying it to that question: perhaps the "avoid the bad things" group tend to choose Acrobat Merisiel more (she does have a power that enhances her evasion). And also, Thief Merisiel has a power that already helps with closing locations.

Could the difference also be related to the Prison (aka Merisiel's favorite location)? It does take Charisma to close. And I think lots of people likes to send Merisiel there, but she needs help to close it. Thief Merisiel can get that help in the form of her "+2 to close a location power" while Acrobat Merisiel can only get it through skill feats.

Though, this raises another chain of thought: How many people pick their role far in advance? I know for Sajan, I planned on being Drunken Master from the start and so I gave him some Constitution feats. But for Ezren, I actually was undecided up to the moment I picked the role (I actually picked Evoker and 15 seconds later changed my mind.)

Here is something I did with these numbers that might be of some interest.

First, I went through each character and noted the differences between the power feats on both of the roles for that character. I listed these next to each other to create a dual "trade-offs" list. The idea was to be able to compare the trade-offs everyone had to consider when choosing the roles for their characters. Many of the powers on both of the roles are identical, so they are not trade-offs. I just wanted to consider the trade-offs. The side-by-side list accomplishes this.

Next, I categorized each of the "trade-off" power feats under the following heads:

Offense: helps character to succeed at combat checks.
Defense: helps character to minimize damage.
Adventuring: helps character to complete scenarios (by defeating barriers, and closing locations, etc.)
Acquisition: helps character to acquire new cards.
Health: helps character to manipulate the character deck (by recharging cards, and healing, etc.)
Predictability: helps character to manipulate location decks (by looking at cards in location decks, and rearranging cards in location decks, etc.)
Versatility: helps character in a variety of different situations (by adding to checks, and drawing cards, etc.)
Hand Size: Since hand size tends to improve versatility but also tends to make keeping a character healthy harder, I've made this a separate category.

Then, I did a little math. Warning: there are many reasons to think that these numbers are not statistically significant and these numbers represent a fairly superficial analysis of the data; these are more just to give an idea than to give any scientific evidence. The point of the math was to try to get a sense of which categories people were tending to favor when considering the trade-offs in role selection.

Okay, so which of the categories do you think people tended to lean toward? The results are a bit shocking!

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Versatility is favored by a whopping +35.55%

The numbers for the rest of the categories are fairly unexciting:

Health: +1.32%
Acquisition: -3.34%
Offense: -3.62%
Defense: -6.06%
Hand Size: -7.73%
Adventuring: -13.16%

The most shocking of these to me is Offense. I expected there to be a significant bias toward offense, but there just wasn't. It looks like people have tended to prefer versatile characters over powerful characters!
