Hey all, I am moving to LA in a month and will be looking to find some groups.

Any advice or guidance on finding a group is much appreciated...

I find Meetup confusing, because I still haven't wrapped my head around how big LA is. I know GameHaus is not too far, but that's about it.

also if anyone has a house to rent in that area, send me a pm

Ross,

Preemptive welcome to the City of Angels!

There's lots of stuff nearby (nearby in LA terms... the city is big).

Gamehaus is fairly close. I've never been, but I know people who have, and they've all said good things.

On Saturdays, Knight Ware in Studio City has open gaming and you'd be welcome to join us there. We usually do some board gaming and some pen-and-paper RPG stuff (probably a 30/70 split, respectively).

Friday Night Dice is worth checking out. Lots of awesome gaming going on there on Friday evenings.

On Wednesday evenings, Next Gen Games has open gaming in the Mid-Wilshire/Miracle Mile area.

There are tons of opportunities to play in and around LA. I'd recommend figuring out meetup as a number of groups do use this medium.

If you have any questions, please ask.

The LA climate is heavily influenced by the ocean--which is cold: good news, no hurricanes; bad news, you won't want to swim long without a wetsuit. If you like outdoors activities like hiking or sailing, I suggest you join the Sierra Club.

The climate affects a lot of things. While you'll (I hope) never see the high humidity of a tropical or continental climate, the closer to the coast you are, the more you get the cool sea breeze, and the less humidity. Very much, climate determines land (housing) costs and A/C costs. For example, I live in coastal OC (Orange County, "Behind the Orange "curtain"), so I run my A/C primarily to reduce humidity--the recent 100+F temperatures (40c) were quite comfortable, and I left my A/C off, since the wind was off the dry desert (which is not quite as redundant as it sounds). Electricity is expensive, but cooling costs are low.

Walts' list is pretty complete, however there are still many other smaller local groups to be found on Meetup.

Long shot here, but another group of note is the Gay Board Gaymers. They are quite large too, averaging about 40-70 people per gathering (on Meetup as well). They meet usually once or twice a month in various venues between culver city, downtown LA, Burbank, and Gamehaus Cafe in Glendale. Great groups of friendly folks, and they have several straight folks who are regulars too.

Sadly, Friday Night Dice is essentially extinct.

Also, the list Walt posted is something I developed a long time ago, then let lapse; it''s far from complete at this point; there's still some good information, but there are many other groups and stores that have arisen since then.

Meetup is not a bad place to start; many of the local public groups use it to organize, and I believe you can put a geographic restriction on what it will show you. You can also try Facebook.

Finally, good luck on the housing; those areas are "hip(ster)", therefore expensive, and the housing stock wasn't that great in the first place.

Hey all, thanks for the info, keep it coming!

My choice of neighbourhoods is dictating by proximity to work, and education for my kids, so I have very little wiggle room there. When I look at the houses for rent in our price range and compare to them to houses on the coast that we could live in instead...I cry a little.

Also, on the topic of climate, it was hotter in Ottawa yesterday than in LA. And three weeks ago, it was somewhere between 30-40deg. God I can't wait to move!

This place keeps pretty good tabs on things. Also, the particular event I linked you too I think is nearby I think. Welcome to LA! I've played more board games since moving here than I ever could have imagined!

More accurately, it disbanded itself when the organizers chose to utilize the space for other purposes.

You have a plethora of choices. Welcome to L.A. Hope you enjoy it out here.
