These must be the ultra rare platinium diamond studded dice.

I mean come on that much?

Yeah but now the guy can brag that he won a tournament using little plastic models to all his friends and workmates!

The dice don't actually look that great with the air voids inside.

That's just silly
Lets see 183.00 $Aus can get you:
six plastic dice
or

about 10 x-wing model

or

6 bottles of whiskey

or

a hooker for an hour (not that i would (married)

or

a mix of the above
Actually this upset me so much that i might go for option 3 (whiskey) at the moment

Whats sad is i see them go for over 200 here in USA. I thought about picking up a set, but once i started seeing them hitting 100+, no thanks, my dice roll just as many hits (though sometimes i wonder) as they will. If anything i can paint mine platinum or Gold and BAM! special looking dice for like $8.

Holy bank account, batman!

Are they individually autographed or what? All those translucent bits (templates/tokens in some special base setS I guess?) look neat but that's a bit obsessive to me... To each his own, I suppose, and if I ever stumble upon even one of those dice I know what I'm doing with it - trading it for a transport.

It goes to show that there are really dumb people in the world. Who is willing to pay close to $200 US for 6 dice worth about $20.

I won't even bother, unless these dice have magical properties, which insures double "crits" with each roll. Why would anyone be so stupid??? That money can be use to make someone's life better... sight.

The dice have a pretty high secondary market value for two reasons:

(1) High Demand: even Top 8 Regional players want more, since ideally you'd want 6 Translucent Attack and 6 Translucent Defense dice.

(2) Low Supply: only eight sets of these per Regional tournament (and very few Regional Tournaments relative to number of X-Wing customers).

I personally wouldn't buy them, but I can see why others are willing to pay that much. Heck, when you figure that it can cost $200-300+ to even attend a Regional Tournament (registration, travel, housing, time away / off work), it starts to look pretty reasonable, even.

PS: Just be thankful these sorts of prizes are only aesthetic upgrades. In Star Trek: Attack Wing, they offer exclusive ship expansions (model, templates, upgrade cards) as prizes, which are playable in tournaments and not released to the public. So you get ships like the Ch'Tang and the Sutherland hitting $100+ on Ebay.

I've seen these dice in action. They roll better than your average dice. Near guaranteed evades and hits on every roll. It's amazing. I saw one come to a complete stop and magically flip to a crit.

They're worth every penny, quid, buck, pence, arm or leg you've got.

The only thing more ridiculous than $200 for six dice, $40 for 10 Evade tokens, and $20 for the Luke card is ...

... I'm not going to sell mine. (Seriously, it's idiotic that I'm not selling them.)

BTW, these dice will probably make it into production at some point. The tiny sliver of "special snowflake" in me hopes not, but the rest of me hopes so. And I suspect the production version won't have the (very prominent) air bubbles.

Hey, speaking of those airbubbles, does anyone think they alter the dice to favor certain faces? I've got some big airbubbles in my (paid for with the Iron Price) dice, and the thought occured to be that those bubbles might effect the dice rolls.

I think they could affect outcomes, but whether they do is a matter for testing.

In my case, they can't possibly perform worse, so I'm good. Nothing to see here, move along.

Undoubtedly they do, but my understanding is that pretty much everything but true-cut "casino" dice will have variations that skew the results. Almost all dice have air bubbles, but you normally can't see them (part of the reason that "casino dice" are translucent is so that you can see the interior).

These dice are probably far from "true random," but so are the standard opaque X-Wing dice, I would imagine.

The good news for gaming is that whatever imperfections exist between individual die probably have an unnoticeable effect on actual game outcomes, since those deviations from "true random" are probably so slim.

For instance, let's assume that one face of a given attack die has a 1/7.938 chance of coming up rather than an 1/8. Across a thousand rolls (that's a lot of X-Wing), you'd expect 125 occurrences versus 125.97 occurrences, which is all said and done a pretty negligible difference.

Probably, but you are not running a casino. It is probably not noticable in practice. Maybe you want to make sure that you use a random die for each roll instead of your "favourite" one.

Also, has anyone ever cut an opaque die in half? I am not sure whether they have air bubbles.

I had 20 focus tokens from last years regionals and sold 10 for $100. Considering selling the other 10 as the money would pay for either a transport and a wave 4 ship, one of each wave 4 ships, or a tantive IV. I picked up the cog-o-two tokens and just waiting to finish painting to see how they look. If they look good, selling off the 10 from regionals.

Toss them in a cup of water and see which way they end up ... they might provide a significant gaming edge.

I'm not so sure you got 'lambasted' the majority of responses showed a nice diversity of takes on the situation. Granted the guy that sold them (or did like him) wasn't too happy but I think that's fair enough. Overall the thread showed there are many disparate views on it. To be quite honest I don't think they were worth it but everyone values a given item differently.

Maybe the buyer had won such a set of dice and had subsequently lost them, that being the case I could completely understand his wish to replace them at any cost. My daughter bent one of our range rulers and even though I have two acrylic sets and a 'good' ruler from a second core it still irks me (irrationally I know) that I have a defective core set!

Interestingly, refrigerators are extremely useful in the arctic- though they are primarily used to prevent food from freezing solid.
