All of a sudden I can’t vote in polls and can’t mark subscriptions read. Multiple browsers.

Happening to anyone else?

Uniformly, quick links don’t work. For example, I can edit this post or quote it, but not quickreply to it. The mainbar dropdowns (Forums >) don’t drop anything down.

Also only certain images are showing; some microbadges and avatars aren’t displaying.

Server gone down?

Hmm. Very strange. I still cannot.

Can you see your avatar? Your avatar isn’t visible for me.

This is what I see:

Re: Link problems?
Sounds like the domain geekdo-static.com (which hosts most of the JavaScript and images) isn't resolving / is blocked for you. (If so, then more and more content and styling will disappear as it drops out of your browser's cache.) Did you change any browser settings just before this started being a problem? Install any privacy or security related browser extensions, run a firewall update, or virus scanner update?

Does the homepage load its content for you?

Right, I’ve done both.

I opened up my wife’s Firefox and everything seems normal there.

Possible something was changed that intersected with Opera? Because that’s the browser I always use and most of the site functionality just stopped working a couple hours ago, for no discernable reason I can find.

No, it doesn’t.

I’ll look into geekdo-static.com. Mystified about what would have caused that, but that sounds like what would do it for me.

Re: Link problems?
I don't know what the terminology is in Opera-land, but on the Firefox side the naming of a preference to trigger this would be "block third party content". Also, if you use adblock, you could've maybe accidentally blocked the entire domain when only intending to block a single advertisement.

An easy way to test if this is specific to boardgamegeek, or a more generic setting, is to go to ebay.com, which hosts its main logo on ebaystatic.com - if you can't see that logo, it'll be a generic setting / preference (pointing to a block somewhere of all third party content). If you can see it, it'll more likely be specific to BGG (and so pointing at something like an ad-blocker or nanny-script).

Re: Link problems?
I’m all good on eBay, and I didn’t install anything, make any changes to anything, or even visit anywhere other than BGG before this started. And I don’t use an ad blocker.

Guess I’ll fiddle around some and see what gives.

Thanks all for the help!

The funny thing is that I can see some images that come from geekdo-static.com.

For example, I can see this image fine:

Re: Link problems?
Yes, in fact I did that and then rolled back to an image of my browser setup (everything is in-directory, nothing in registry) from May 2.

No luck. Everything is still nonfunctional for me.

Ran two scans. One picked up nothing, the other picked up vestiges of a toolbar in IE, which I don’t use.

Re: Link problems?
Aldie, have you guys made any exciting changes lately?

The only browsers I try that it appears not to be working in are IE8, which I don’t use, and Opera 10.63, which is the version I’ve insisted on staying with.

Firefox and Chrome appear to work fine, but I religiously don’t use either of those.

Re: Link problems?
Browsing elsewhere on the Internet, it does seem to be a problem just with BGG for me. My browser memory usage is down 66%, pointing to a lot of BGG not loading for me (most of my tabs are BGG).

I’ll post back if I figure anything out.

Re: Link problems?
When I copy the “image address” address for, say, my avatar, it gives me the link

data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==

instead of what it should be,

http://cf.geekdo-static.com/avatars/avatar_id56565.png

(Which, by the way, I can see fine if I link to it directly.)

Somehow my browser is interpreting BGG’s links wrong—but not all links. JavaScript ones, for starters, and GIF microbadges and all (as far as I can tell) avatars.

Okay, it’s not me: Front page seems destroyed, and avatars are not showing up.

Aldie, any idea what’s causing this?

Looks like someone is using the Lazyload plugin(or something like it) for jquery, and it's not loading the images onto the display. OR there is a compatibility issue with Opera and the loading script.

The URI you listed above is a 1x1 transparent pixel, usually used by lazy loading image scripts as a placeholder.

My next suggestion would be to disable all your plugins and see if that works, then re-enable one at a time and find the culprit.

What should it look like? I get the same thing loading it in Firefox (BGG works on Firefox) and in Opera (BGG not working): 363 pages of JavaScript code.

The problem is that I have no add-ons or plugins installed. It’s exactly the same installation of Opera that I was using a half-hour before everything stopped working.

To be even more accurate, it’s the installation of Opera I was using back on May 2, my last backup of my browser installation.

Also, as previously mentioned, BGG simultaneously stopped working on IE, which I don’t use but thanks to the nature of Windows is always available if I need an alternate browser to test BGG on.

Maybe some update to the BGG JS code that is incompatible with JS standards supported in some older browsers?

Well I've made changes to the comments code - I'll try to dig up Opera and see if anything is complaining here.
