Is this expansion equivalent to Machi Koro Plus?

Yep!

With the addition of extra starting cards, landmarks and major developments to make the game support 5 players.

Love 'em even if a few games get scuttled from time to time.

That's awesome. Thanks for going a little extra on this one (beyond just a localized Machi Koro Plus).

I'm not sure I want to play Machi Koro 5-player, but I think it's a good thing to make possible.

Great !(?) I had ordered the Japanese version because I knew I would get the base game and the expansion at the same time, and now, I see that the US expansion will allow a 5-player game while the Japanese sticks to 4-player sessions. Bummer...

Not a huge deal...I don't think you want to play Machi with 4p, much less 5p. The downtime is too large, and the attacks too potent.

All my Machi Koro sessions were 4P games so far (2 with expansion, 1 without) and they were great - since I always won And thinking again about it, I think you're right about the slower 5P configuration...
