Weekend Mini-Challenge #2!

Goal: Play two games from our 10x10 Challenge

Date: Friday July 11th 5PM - Monday July 14th (whenever we go to work)

Participants:
Caroline
Noreen
Jesb
Joline
Judy
Kathryn
Polgara
Sarah B
Semijawa
Stephanie
Zoe

In honor of the fact that so many of us are participating in the challenge (and some...like myself...are so late to the game), I thought it'd be fun to have a W&G support group where we can talk about our progress or any challenges that come up while participating in the 10x10 Challenge. The original geeklist is awesome, but HUGE (way to go Sarah) and I'd like to know how all of you are getting along with it without trying to click through THIRTY TWO pages!

Here's a link to the original:

http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/166160/2014-challenge-play...

And a link to the list that ties all the W&G lists together:
http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/168511/2014-gaming-resolut...

I can't wait to see how many of us can fill up all those stars!

To make tracking each other's progress easier, here is the list of 10x10 Official Geeklist items by participants who have posted this link thus far, as well as the links to personal tracking Geeklists. If you want to add yours to the list (or if I messed anything up), just let me know in the comments and I'll put the link in lickity-split.

Thanks for starting this Jes. I was actually thinking of creating a thread, but you beat em to it.

In all honesty, I created the challenge because of you ladies here. I expected to create the Geeklist and have several of you join and maybe some others and that it'd be a couple of pages long. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought it'd be 32 pages long, people joining all the time, there'd be game giveaways and so many people talking about it. My challenge has been mentioned in many blogs and most recently on the Dice Tower podcast.

I am so humbled by the response.

And the challenge has changed me, for the better. I used to be a very sore loser, but I found it was because we were constantly playing new games and I'd never get better, never felt like I was learning and growing. But now that I have played so many games more than once, I have changed my perspective and outlook. Sure, I still get grumpy sometimes, but I now value the experience of the game, the journey I go on, whether it is a light fun game or a highly complex strategy game.

And this has spread to all my gaming experiences, not just the ones I play for my 10x10 challenge. We've actually game more this year than last, and getting through a lot of our new games as well.

I can't wait to hear how this challenge has affected others and I am definitely going to run this challenge next year. As it gets closer to the end of the year, I'll start revising how I want to run it, and I'll be sure to get as much feedback and input from you all to make it the best it can be.

Thank you all!

Hi!
Nice idea for a thread.
This is my entry:

Item for Geeklist "2014 Challenge: Play 10 Games 10 Times Each"

After I chose my games I struggled a little bit later if my choice was good.
Then Sarah changed the rules and allowed to exchange games, and first I was tempted to do it.
But then I said to myself that I chose my games for a reason, and decided to stick to my initial list.
I have 64/100 now and am sure to finish in 2 or 3 month!
I´m a hardcore participant, yeah!

This is a great idea for a thread! Reading through that geeklist is daunting... and time consuming.

I'm here on the list: My Challenge Stats
And I have my own geeklist that tracks my plays with stories here: Carrie's 2014 Challenge: Play 10 Games 10 Times Each

I'm at 37 out of 100, but I figure I'll get to half-way in June, and then make time for the rest.

Onirim will be easy to complete, but I'm dragging it out - I'm making a redesign of the game using my art, so I might wait until I finish the redesign to get the final plays in...

Shadows Upon Lassadar will also be super easy for me to complete.

I plan on playing the solo variant of Tales of the Arabian Nights while my husband is off at a computer conference next month - and I plan on running it as a PbF as well (when I have more time!) - which should get more plays in.

The Mystic Wood will get played - as soon as I make it. Which I almost done - just another 8 sheets to print out, and then I have to cut it up...

I'm waiting for Elevenses to arrive - and then I'll play it with my friends during lunch. Or at the board game night I host at the library.

Ace Detective is the most painful one on the list - I was so hoping my husband would like the game, but he doesn't. I'm working on making a solo variant so I can play it alone - and to fix the problems he hates about the game - and I'm 1/4th of the way done - I just need more time to work on it. (Not much progress shown, but I did post it here: Ace Detective Variant: Alibis and Solo Play.

There are a few games that I own that weren't on the list because I thought I wouldn't play them that much - even though I wanted to - and based on how little I have played some games, I might swap them out.

Mainly, Once Upon a Time: The Storytelling Card Game will probably take the place of Carcassonne (for several reasons: I do own Tales, but I don't own Carcassonne, I ended up playing a lot of Tales with my friends since my husband hates the game. I honestly didn't think I'd get that many plays in, but my friends like it, so yay!)

Oh, and while we are on the topic of challenges... inspired by the 10x10 challenge is this: 2014 RPG Challenge: Play Five RPGs You Have Never Played Before (Each At Least Once)

I'm here on that list: My Challenge.

Sadly, nothing new yet - well, one homebrew - but I'm waiting to see what is said about how to categorize homebrew games.

This late in the game, I'm not going to try the hardcore one. Plus my husband and I are only overlapping on a few, so there's a good chance I'll play a game he picked out for his list ten times, and will want to swap it out to count as one of mine.

I am 59 games in which sounds good but we went like gangbusters for the first couple of months and then we've slacked off, getting distracted by other games.

There are two games on the list which we don't find fun (Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small and Suburbia) and another Amerigo) which we've only played once but didn't grab us right away.

I am reluctant to substitute other games, however, because I keep feeling that we just have not given the games in question enough of a chance. Even if the end of the year comes and we don't finish the list, I have to say I have really enjoyed this challenge.

Sarah, I loved hearing how the challenge has been so beneficial to your game playing.

I didn't even know there was a solo variant! How fun. It's one of my favorite games, but we always play it much more frequently in the winter months (good game by a fire place) so I haven't put it on my list. But now that I know there's a solo variant, I may put it on there!

Thanks Kathy! It really has been an eye-opening experience. And part of why we've been playing games more is because my husband is finding it more fun to play since my attitude has changed. Before, he said he was always reluctant to play, let alone suggest a game t play, in case I'd get upset. Now, he regularly asks to play games and suggests ones he wants to play.

Also, I hope you'll give Suburbia another chance. I know not all games are for everyone, but we love that one and it's my husband's favorite game.

I forgot to say how I was doing in the challenge. Happy to say that I'm 49% done. We've been trying to play 10 games a month, which we've been pretty successful at.

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords – Base Set and Suburbia are completed, and quite easy to get to the table.

Unsurprisingly, Agricola and Village have been harder to get to the table due to their length. With the way my health has been, it's been hard for me to have that much time where I've felt well enough to play. But I am working hard on getting it under control.

I'm really glad you both are having more fun. I know I wouldn't like it if I was only ever playing a game one time either so it makes sense to me that this is making the difference for you.

As to Suburbia. Well, I just have the sneaking suspicion that we are doing something wrong. Maybe reading more into the rules than is there? I don't know. I have watched Rahdo's runthrough and other videos and can't catch anything. Maybe I will get to see it played at Dice Tower Con and that will clear things up. Right now it's just frustrating so I am holding off until I can figure it out.

This is an excellent thread!
Kathy - Suburbia is fun, you should definately give it more of a chance.

The main reason I joined the 10x10 challenge was to have an excuse/goal just to play more games in general (they didn't specifically have to be the games on my list). Having games that 'needed' to get played was a way to avoid the "want to play a game?" "sure, what do you want to play?" "I don't know, what do you want to play?" "I don't know." conversation that can result in no games getting played.

I started out strong in January with I think (but I don't have my stats with me at work) 18 different games played 25 times. Each successive month got less... April was pitiful (only four different games played, I don't remember how many times). May has been a beautiful resurgence in frequent gaming, primarily due to Geekway to the West. That awesome experience has encouraged my parents to try to get together with my sister and I more often for gaming, although this can be difficult due to conflicting schedules. Anyway, hopefully this much game playing trend will continue.

I am only at 39/100 plays of my games, but I believe I can do it! We just need to stop getting distracted by our new games from Geekway and play some of the challenge ones.

Good luck to us all! And thanks again for the idea Sarah!

We're considering a last minute trip to Origins and if that happens there's a chance my list will change drastically. Haha. We're still catching up with the games we got at Gencon two years ago!

Maybe if we do go, this list will help temper our need to buy so many and save us some money. Another benefit you probably wouldn't have guessed, Sarah!

If I changed my games in my list, I'm sure it would make it easier (we've already played Glass Road 5 times since buying it which is more plays than several of our 10x10 games have gotten). But I really want to stick to my original list, I mean, I picked those games for good reasons didn't I? Having an unplayed games pile is wierd for me. Usually we just get 1 game at a time and play it right away. We still have 4 of the 8 game we got at Geekway to try out (we've played 3 and one of the free ones we aren't interested in).

I actually think that for us, having the new ones still to sprinkle in if we get tired of the challenge games might be a good thing. (I don't know though for sure, 'cause we had plenty of other games we were playing in between the challenge games before.)

I'm at 54/100 (here's my geeklist: Aniaga's 2014 Challenge: Play 10 Games 10 Times Each)

Because I entered the contest in a hurry (at the last moment in December) I completely forgot to set up a "backup" (or alternative) game. This bothers me very much as now I see that I'm going to have trouble with completing 2 of my chosen games I know that rules have now changed and it's possible to change the games on your list, but I don't feel comfortable doing that.

That's why I have a question to Sarah:
Could I add an "alternative" game so late in the year? Is it at all possible to add another game (without changing the ones that have been chosen at first)?
I don't want to break any rules and I won't do anything with my list without Sarah's consent...

Great idea! My geeklist where I track my plays and try to put some comments on those plays.

I can definitely use some support, as this is probably the first year we haven't been playing more games than the year before, and we're not really very good at getting the games we chose to the table. We're 18/100 so far, and we haven't gotten Mansions of Madness or Mage Knight to the table at all. Dominion is our most played game, and even that's only on 4/10 plays.

So... I guess we've got work to do .

Indeed there is a solo variant! What version of the game do you have? 1985 or the more modern one? I have the 1985 version, and there are three different ways to play. One is solo. For solo you have to complete all these goals:

• You have to complete the Merchant version of the game (become fabulously wealthy with at least one treasure)
• You need to meet your Story/Destiny Point goals (or become sultan)
• You need to complete three quests
• And you need to do this all before the deck runs out (so you start with deck 1, and it ends when you reach the end of deck 3.)

For harder solo variants, you start with deck 2 or deck 3 - giving yourself less time to complete your goals.

Also, any cards that affect other players are left in the deck for the purpose of quests, but their abilities cannot be used.

Yes, inquiring minds want to know (since my alternate games are video games and don't count towards the contest this year. )

I'm at 61/100 but two of the longer games Nations and Terra Mystica are hard to get in and one that is much less popular that requires 3 players will also be quite difficult. Some of the other less popular games I can squeeze in some 2 player games with my partner I am determined to be hardcore and will keep plugging along! My gaming buddies will be sick me choosing all the games this year.

edit: OMG I can't type today worked too late last night and upt to early tp be a work again

From what I understand it's totally fine to swap out games just not for the "hardcore" version. I think I'll end up doing so eventually with a lighter game like Love Letter, but I'm going to push for meatier games personally since the in depth aspect is so appealing.

I'm definitely including my husband and my favorite two player games. It's usually just us on Sundays and that way we can get more played during the week. A friend of ours is on board with playing eight more games of Seasons though, which is exciting!

Oh my gosh Sarah we sound a lot alike! I've also been learning to lose more gracefully, especially when it's just my husband and I playing.

Our entry in the geeklist is here: Owen and Noreen's 10x10 entry

And our geeklist is here: Our entry in the 10x10 2014 challenge

We're 82% done. But the games remaining are the bigger ones on our list. I'm not sure when we'll get done, but I'm hoping its before we go to GenCon. If not, we may never get it done

We still need to complete Arkham Horror, Pandemic, and Firefly: The Game.

Sarah, do you have any idea what kind of challenge you're going to pose for 2015?

I've thought about signing up for the challenge since I first heard about it because I think it's a great idea, but whenever I look at it I chicken out because I'm afraid of failing! *kicks self in butt*

I will try to add myself to the list this weekend. If I count the plays since January (is this cheating?) it may not be so bad. Maybe.

I just found out what the 10x10 challenge was a couple of days ago but I really want to jump in. I only started logging plays about a month ago so I'd have a lot of catching up to do. I mentioned the challenge to my fiancé and he seemed up for it but we need to settle on a list of games.

Deciding on games together was easy for the first six for us. But we're both pushing to hit ten with four that are different. That way we'll both hit 10x10 (hopefully) and we don't have to settle 100% right now. He has yet to choose two though, so my choices stand a better chance.
