Saruman sent forth his hosts to enslave Rohan. Marching on the Fords of Isen, his armies encountered a plucky Rohan Footman, who bellowed "NONE SHALL PASS!". In a three-round combat, said Black Footman dished out four damage to the infinately superior force, before finally having all his limbs severed. "All right, we'll call it a draw."
Theodred heard the battle and set out to relieve his countrymen, but as he was crossing the fords he realized he was too late. Reversing course, he swung east and then north, attacking a fresh army of half-orcs. The orcs fought savagely, counterattacking and killing the Rohrim to a man. Westfold soon fell to the Shadow. All Rohan could do was keep a token force in Helm's Deep.
Mordor orcs crossed the river and bore down on Rohan Plains. A hastily assembled force counter-attacked, and appeared to route them, but they were relieved by Ugluk's Warband, and it was the Rohan army which was wiped out.
With no force capable of taking the field, Eomer hastily mustered in Edoras. He sortied , linking up with Aragorn, and scattered a raiding band or two, but eventually had to retreat into Edoras under a crushing weight of Dunlendings.
All settlements were under control of the White Hand. He had now but to take either Helm's Deep or Edoras. Helm's Deep had Gather and Marshaled two riders to supplement its lone bowman. It was to be combined-attacked by three hosts of Saruman, when the ents (with Merry and Pippin intervened and crushed two, taking up residence at West Dike.
Dense Fog repleatedly cancelled Saruman's too-few army dice, so the three middle-weight armies around Edoras were unable to coordinate their attacks. To compound matters, the one with leadership was singled out and destroyed by Theoden's counter attack.
Fate was at 15 of 18, and the hunt pool was 2, 2*, X*, X*, 1*, 0, so we for-sure had another turn by picking the balcony, but unfortunately the Free played a card as their first action (before Spies could cancel it), which increased fate by 1, thus changing the odds of a game-ending ent-strike from 0% to 96.7%.
With a furious attack on Helm's Deep, the shadow ran out of orcs with one damaged rider left standing.
Indeed, the Free drew their "2" hunt tile, and the Ents raged against Isengard. Saruman fell. Rohan was saved!
Saruman diverted one too many army from Helm's Deep to Edoras. Edoras had so many re-rolls, it wasn't funny, while Helm's Deep had only one leadership. Though the ents were clearly going to wipe out several armies there, one more army might have made the difference.
