Hello,

It's our first Manorcon this weekend (whoo hoo!), and wondered if there was anyone that has been in previous years, that can give us some pointers?

I heard that there is no games library, how does that affect the number and variety of games there? We will be taking some, do most people bring a whole bunch too?

If anyone wants a game, then let me know and we can meet up, we are taking Struggle Of Empires, if anyone fancies sharing in our first ever game then please shout!

Cheers

Mike

Hi Mike
I have been attending Manorcon on and off for the last 20 years or so and it is a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Although there is no games library most people just dump their games
around them in the room and there is normally no problems with borrowing the games as long as you ask first.

You will find that most of the popular games will be well represented there and that you will have no problems finding opponents.

Most people just grab a game set it up on a table and then grab anyone who looks interested to play.

Gaming usually starts from 9am most days and continues into the early hours (with a lull in the early evening when people disappear for food).

The rooms on site are fine for sleeping and are a bit basic as is the food.

Hope this helps and i might see you there on Sunday

Im there all weekend except Saturday lunchtime (at a wedding) and Saturday evening (at the reception). However I'll pop back inbetween for a few hours as the newsletter told me there's a second hand games stall on Saturday afternoon.

I'll probably end up missing the croquet as well

Mike,
I'll be there for the full four days, though its also my first time at ManorCon so I can't offer much advice.

For what it's worth, I'm bringing Canal Mania, Blue Moon City, Modern Art, Medici and maybe some combination of Thurn&Taxis, Amun Re, Attika, Ys and Industrial Waste. I know someone else who's probably bringing Antike, Age of Steam and Santiago.

I'm hesitant to commit to a game of Struggle of Empires at the moment - it depends how busy things are, when you hope to play, etc. On the other hand, I wouldn't rule it out. I've played it once and really enjoyed it.

If we don't meet up for SoE then perhaps we can meet up for some other games?

Amun Re wins me as a player, and tell your friend he HAS to bring Antike! My first time so us Manorcon 'virgins' have to stick together, right!

It was my first time last year. I'd echo everything Simon said. The only games I brought last year were to sell. As a result, I had a fun time playing lots that were new to me.

Watch out for my Dutch auction - your chance to buy some criminally under-rated (by me) games at progressively cheaper prices.

Sounds like it will be another UK BGGcon then this year, as it will be my first Manorcon too.

I've been attending Stabcon and Midcon the last couple of years, so I'm expecting something similar. I'm not particularly interested in tournaments but really like finding an interesting selection of open gaming. I'll be bringing my usual car boot full of games!

The way it works is that I'll pin up a list of games with their opening prices in a prominent position as soon as I arrive on Friday. Every so often over the weekend, I'll drop the prices of remaining games. Pay me the current price at any time and the game will be yours. As in any Dutch auction, it's a question of how low you dare go on that game that you covet.

Great response - thanks guys!

I will probably be bringing La Citta, Struggle of Empires, Bootleggers and Diamant or some combination of the above. We will probably also get a few games from the guys I'c coming with too.

Happy to meet up with anyone for a game or two, I will have my name badge (or you can simply look the Richard Gere look-a-like - ok thats not entirely true!)

See you all on friday!!

Damn! I didn't know about this one, so I won't be coming. I'll be at The Cast Are Dice though. Is there a list of UK cons anywhere?

Cheers,

Jack

I'll definately be bringing Caylus and PR, maybe Mexica.

Steve, my Catan addicted mate, will probably have just about any & every version of non-space based Catan, including the great wall of china which we like as a six-player game.

I hope so, I certainly did.

For those interested, the Manorcon committee have decided that the University of Birmingham are never going to provide the right facilities again (the light at the end of the tunnel of the renovations is a blowtorch - their analogy) and Manorcon will be moving to the University of Leicester next year. (It would have been this year, but moving after 24 years takes time.) I hope it will be a move for the best, I'm certainly planning to be there next year. Apparently Leicester have a track record of being good for other not dissimilar requirement events.

[For those interested, the issues have included lack of additional rooms for events like the bring and buy, not even getting sole use of the area we do use for quite all of the time, a layout that makes the whole area legally a bar so gaming has to finish by 2 a.m. - though I'm in bed by then - bar not open long enough - closed at 10.30 p.m. Sunday - prices that are increasing as facilities become less gamer-friendly and so on.]

I had a great time.

My only regret was failing to say "hello" to most of those bgg-ers whose names I'd noted. I think the only new name/face match up I made was Paul Allwood.

The reason (of course) was too much gaming. It seemed non-stop. Maybe I should cut back a little and socialise more?

I did actually go searching for Andy Parsons' Dutch auction, but couldn't find it anywhere. And right at the end of the con I interrupted a game of Ra to move to the front to hear a few awards and lo & behold, there's Andy's auction list right next to me, stuck to a wall (not the notice boards!). Only Medici remained - and the Amigo version. £7 - I'll have that since we'd played Medici the night before, I'd liked the game but I was tired of dealing with the Mayfair design issues. Must find man in blue checked shirt. While listening to the awards, a man in a blue check shirt walked up, crossed off Medici, and walked away again before I was alert enough to say "hello". I really must try harder next time.

Hopefully, I'll have more luck meeting new people at Shire Games' "Cast are Dice" in a few weeks.

Much like Steve, I played lots of games and despite looking on name badges now and again didn't see any of you guys there this time.

I had a really great time though, and won all three games of Caylus I played....

oh did I already post that on Mikes list?....

...and Lukes?...

Looking forward to CastareDice, where I suspect it will be impossible to fail to meet some BGGers .... I'd better work at getting an Avatar by then!!

(GG donations or suggestions accepted!)

Missed out on Manorcon again this year - although it sounds like the move to Leicester can only be a good move (as I live in Burton it's very slightly closer too ), but am certainly intending to go to the cast are dice in Stoke in a couple of weeks... Hope to see some of you there.

Hi Simon, we met and played (and ran with a bull?) together, though I didn't make the BGG connection at the time, and perhaps you didn't.

Likewise, Paul Allwood.

Steve, I'm sorry, I was the person who snuck Medici out from under your nose. I hadn't seen the Dutch Auction list at first, usually detouring around the wall on which it was stuck, and had to ask Andy where it was

Christopher, I saw you only from afar.

Mike and Luke, as I mentioned elsewhere, and Russell, sorry I missed you.
