One of the big conversations about second edition a while back was what to put on the BACK of the character cards. There was a survey/vote, and the answer chosen was to have Alternative Gender characters (same stats, different name and picture), to help bring some varriation into the game.

Did anything every come of this? I pinged it once on the Kickstarter page, but everyone is SO busy, I thought I would raise it up the flag pole again.

Hey Doug!

Good to have you bringing it up now.

Excellent timing!

by the way, on a very related note...

Anyone who wants a general update on CMG, check this out...

http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1181962/update-from-common-m...

Hey...

Do you have a link to that thread handy?

UPDATE:

I found that link...

http://boardgamegeek.com/article/14668573#14668573

Also, I will check in with Cindy again about this. She and I were talking about this in conjunction with 2E.

Does that mean, yes? no? maybe? Sources are cloudy, ask again later?

I left my magic 8-ball at home. I am super excited about this, and really hope it happens.

Maybe we should just rename them all with names like:
Pat
Chris
Cameron
Riley
Sam
Charlie
Rory
Reagan
Skylar
Morgan
Jamie
Francis
Quinn
Drew
Alex
Andy
Bobby
and so many more!

UPDATE:

Good News for the Irishman!

Doug (and all concerned fans of the game), I have talked to Cindy about this, and she and I are on the same page, which is also the same page as YOU!

(I think)

Here is the plan...

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

2ND EDITION CHARACTERS:

all exactly the same as 1st edition ones, except that...

on the back sides of each original character is "the opposite sex" with the same last name and the same powers and abilities!

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

In order to pull this off, we need to get some new art from George (8 new Characters), and we will need to have 16 signatures (not 8).

At this point, I see no issue with getting this done.

Stay Tuned!

We are thinking of keeping the names the same on the one side (original side), and then for the back side...

To just go with whatever (first) name seems to fit that Character and not worrying too much about how close the names are.

(Last names will be identical though)

That is our current thinking, but I want to talk a bit more with Cindy on this.

SIDE NOTE:

By the way...

When I say "Talk" (as in "to Cindy") I mean exchange written messages. I use that term in that way often. To my way of thinking, in the year 2014, this is a good use of the term "Talk".

Does anyone disagree?

I'm just curious.

(sorry for the side note)

Discussed, shared, spoken, talked, messaged, mailed, emailed, texted, communicated, chatted... they all tend to get lumped together even though most are different.

I "spoke" to Doug about using his brother as one of these new characters.

He's an officer on one of the big urban districts.

I love this idea of using real cops as inspiration for the character art!

We did this with Bart in the 1st edition.

We need 8 new images from George to complete this project (expanding the characters from 8-16).

I'm waiting to hear back from him about this now.

Let's get back to Doug's brother for a second...

It's not going to work out for him, but maybe his buddies on the force.

(I'm waiting to hear back on that situation, but it does not look likely at this point)

The issue with using him specifically (Doug's brother) is that we want a nice mix/balance, in both gender and race/ethnicity, and we are already overstocked in the area of Caucasian/male officers.

I am going to poke around a bit to see what can be found regarding this.

"Always start with Cindy!"

That's my main rule of thumb when it comes to cops!

She knows everybody in every department from Chicago to St. Paul!

(hardly an exaggeration)

So, in case anyone reading this thinks they have some connection with a police force that might want to get involved with Police Precinct, let me state exactly what we want...

We need permission to use photos of officers as the inspiration for the art for 8 new characters.

Let me know if you think you got somethin'!

I am a police officer and have been for the last 16 years. Are you looking for pictures of officers to serve as inspiration or to do there likeness forthe art? If so I can help you out.

UPGRADE-ABLE TO JOE:

so here is how the characters have played out at this point...

Some are simply male version on one side, female on the other. Meaning all of these have this dynamic...

1 Yin Kirkland - badge # 52-476
Strength Levels: same as Other side (1,2,1)
Special Abilities: Same as other side (Intuition and SWAT)

2 Yvonne Pierce - badge # 52-479
Strength Levels: same as Other side (2,1,1)
Special Abilities: Same as other side (Connected and Organized)

3 Cindy Hartley - badge # 52-483
Strength Levels: same as Other side (1,2,1)
Special Abilities: Same as other side (Gut Feeling and Tough)

4 Gloria Odell - badge # 52-484
Strength Levels: same as Other side (1,1,2)
Special Abilities: Same as other side (Resourceful and Thorough)

5 Regina Edwards - badge # 52-488
Strength Levels: same as Other side (1,2,1)
Special Abilities: Same as other side (Intuition and SWAT)

6 Pablo Costello - badge # 52-491
Strength Levels: same as Other side (1,2,1)
Special Abilities: Same as other side (Intuition and Thorough)

7 Horace Sears - badge # 52-497
Strength Levels: same as Other side (1,1,2)
Special Abilities: Same as other side (Coordinator and City Knowledge)

But...

One of the Charcter Tiles is NOT like that.

It's the "Kinney" tile.

Joe on one side and Zuhra on the other.

They happen to be cousins actually.

If you want to play this character tile, you must start on the "Level I" side and if you choose to, you can upgrade yourself by "transferring".

See below...

How to "Be Joe!"...

You start out as...

8 Zuhra Kinney - badge # 52-499
Strength Levels: same as Other side (2,1,2)
Special Abilities: Same as other side with Versatile, but Committed is changed to Transfer
Here is how Transfer Reads: Just before the movement phase of any turn, you may use your solid contacts in other parts of the Department to get a transfer by simply paying the price (One Donut plus one Police Card, or 4 Police Cards), and flipping your Character Card. Then complete the rest of your turn using your new character.

Then you become…

9 Joe Kinney - badge # 51-437
Strength Levels: same as Other 1st Edition
Special Abilities: same as Other 1st Edition
New Info: He is a Level II Character. You can only play Joe if you Transfer him via his Cousin Zuhra.

We decided to make the Kinney Tile an upgradeable one because...

That is a direction we want to go with some of the new characters we plan to release in the future, so...

Consider Kinney a leader in this movement.

AND...

because some have argued that Joe is more powerful than the other characters.

To which we say...

"He is a very good one to play and can really help the team!"

So...

No denying that he is strong and maybe even stronger than the rest.

So now, if you want to play Joe, you have at least one turn of delay in getting to this level of strength since you need to upgrade through a transfer.

(Though technically another player could do a Donut Run and enable you to take your first turn as Joe)

This approach should go a long way toward dealing with this possible character over-strength.
