I remember playing this back in the late 80's... Can't tell you a single thing about it, but I seem to remember everyone that participated had a good time.

In for one... Why not?

I agree!

However does the reimplementation of Mister X do anything better than this one?

Here are my comments about Mister X from 2012. I don't think I'd change anything as I still have no interest in playing SY after Mister X. I personally think SY is rated higher out of nostalgia and not because people have played the various editions and made a comparison. Most serious gamers have moved beyond it and don't want to play something that's so similar unless it's a lot more different like Letters from Whitechapel.

"Not sure I can agree with those who say there's more luck in this over Scotland Yard. They must be referring to one of the big differences in movement which is that in this game you draw chips out of a bag whereas in SY travel tokens and special actions are assigned at the beginning of each game.

Drawing out of the bag makes each game of Mister X different and does, I admit, add a small dose of luck. However, that luck is mitigated by what this change brings to the game. Firstly, it makes BOTH sides more powerful and adds more theme. This is especially true for the detectives who can sacrifice their moves (in some cases) in order to do an investigation and find out where Mister X was in last few moves. This IS thematic. In SY you find out where Mister X was at specific and known moves in the game. Mister X rules on this alone trumps SY. Having the detectives decide (vs. the game forcing that moment) when they expose Mister X's movements is the more thematic way to play.

Another change in this game over SY is that Mister X now has a destination. I find that to be far more interesting than just trying to avoid detection.

Lastly, I like how easy it is to handicap one of the sides in Mister X in order to compensate for lack of ability. For example, in a 2 player game you can give either side more tokens which allows for more special actions. Love that in a game - allows a much stronger player to play a weaker one and both can still have a good time.

Have not yet played Letters from Whitechapel so I will revisit this rating after I play that game. Regardless, I have very little interest in playing Scotland Yard after playing Mister X."

Thanks Patrick! That was exactly what I wanted to know. Hope this helps others who were interested as well.

In any case, $14 for a $40 SDJ Winner is a heck of a deal!

Thanks again!

I agree. For $14 if I get a couple of plays out of this with my kids then money well spent for some family fun.

Seems like the game Mister X is out of print so there is that to consider.

Yeah, I have to agree with that. I fear I'm overly aggressive on my opinions of SY because Mister X is pretty much ignored. But for $14 SY new in shrink is a good deal.

Snagged one myself. Will be nice to have a game like this that isn't as complicated as Fury of Dracula (for teaching younger players).

Odd question, if I search for the game, it's not listed at this price. It's only through this link that it's that low. Otherwise it's over $20. How's that work?

Ummmm, yeah?! That is odd. I did a search as well and it did not come up.

I found it at that price via my wish list. It says it's being sold from Amazon, so I assume it's legit!

Strange

I believe so! It looks like it's the 20th anniversary edition, which I think comes with the hat.

If you look at the pictures and description more closely it is unclear which version this is. For example, the picture of the back of the box shows the cardboard visor, not the baseball cap. The item description also says "visor" and not "baseball cap." However, there are a couple of other pictures that show the baseball cap. Later down the posting where it says "what's in the box" it doesn't list either one of the hats. I ordered one with prime shipping so i'll report back once I receive it.

Thanks for the update. I also have prime shipping and I should have this delivered on the 5th according to Amazon. I will report back as well.
