You can see the differences.

The graphics on the cards are updated, so they are easier to identify.
7 Victory Points to win the game
Still has longest Road

Almanac has the Advanced version rules in it.

It certainly is a nice gateway Edition for non-players and kids.

Also, you can win without building a city (5 settlements + longest road), so it's possible to win without ever having held an ore card, and you can't spend ore to buy developments. This greatly decreases the value of the mountains.

Well, you might consider that a balancing mechanism making it more fair, i.e. someone can't get the ore they need to build cities but they can keep chugging along still getting their VPs with towns (or whatever you call them).

Do the cities in this version double production? I'm guessing not.

7 points?? Wow. That makes for a real short game.

Thankfully. Not that there's anything wrong with those 2-3 our games of Settlers I have played in the past (oh, yes there is), but I think I'll like playing to only 7. As it is, I don't think I've played the original game more than twice since 1995 or 1996 due to the fact that it takes too long for what it is. Maybe this edition will rejuvenate my interest.
