Splendor seems to be getting a lot of attention at the moment, and it looks pretty good. However, it also looks quite similar to Saint Petersburg which, admittedly, is out of print at the moment. Is that a fair comparison? If so, does anyone who owns both have a preference?

My favorite 18xx game for six players is two games of 1846 with three players each.

I love St. Pete, as you can no doubt tell from my avatar. I'd say it feels like an economic game and is a bit more complex than Splendor, which feels more like a Ticket to Ride weight game.

St Petersburg without a single, shadow of a doubt.

By a country mile.

And I quite like Splendor now.

Nope. No comparison. Beg, borrow or steal a copy of St Pete...

St. Petersburg is the better game. But Splendor is great fun, and is easier (regretfully) to get to be table. St. Pete is a Top Ten game for me. But I've already played Splendor more often, in just a month.

So there's something to be said for a game that is fun and gets played a lot!

I'm guessing that you'll get Splendor to the table more often and will get more plays out of it, so if that's something you're thinking about, I'd go with Splendor. However, people are playing it a lot, so there's a danger that they might get burnt out on it and might not want to play it much after the novelty has worn off, but since it's a really short game, it may stick around as one of the classic fillers.

Agreed. After a few games of Saint Petersburg you will begin to see the depth of the game unfold. Truly a masterpiece. Also, it has the worst expansion ever.
