Whatever you do will be insignificent. But it is very important that you do it.

Quoting the rule book:
"The deck must have exactly fifty-two cards with printed values."
"The deck can have up to two jokers."
In the section describing Joker: "You choose its suit and value."

So my question is this:
A) Are we building 52 card decks that include up to 2 jokers?
B) Or are we building 52 card decks with the option to add 1-2 Jokers as the 53-54th cards?

Another way to ask this is "Does the joker have a "printed value"?
Following traditional poker, I'd say B is true as the Jokers are just added to standard decks. However, treating the game more like a CCG the size of the deck can be heavily regulated.

I was building towards option A until I realized that Option B makes more sense to me. Just looking for clarification.

Thanks!

A) is right. You can build deck of 52 "normal" cards, deck of 51 "normal" cards and 1 joker or deck of 50 "normal" cards and 2 jokers.

That is incorrect unless the rules have changed with the new release.

Per the rules,
Quote:
"Jokers don't count against the deck limit of fifty-two cards. They're only useful for pulls and Draw hands; you can't play them from your Play hand. A Joker can't make a hand illegal; for example, a legal Four of a Kind with a Joker is a legal Five of a Kind."

So, yes, you can have 52 cards + 2 Jokers

See I agree with both of you, and that's my problem.

Jokers do not have printed values.

The rules for Doomtown have always been, 52 cards, with up to two jokers that do not count against the deck limit. That's partially because an actual poker deck is 54 cards (counting the two Jokers).

They removed the part about "not counting against the deck limit" when writing the rules this time around. My fear is that it was intentional.

This would not be the only change they made to deck building from the old Doomtown.

I agree that thematically it makes sense w/ the 54 card deck, and that's how I'm proceeding unless I hear a convincing argument otherwise (or one of the dev team clarifying).

If this is true, then perhaps in future printings they can add the word also to: "The deck can have up to two jokers."

A Doomtown deck is 52 cards. You may include up to 2 Jokers also; this would make your deck 54 cards if you so choose. Your outfit card is not included in your deck.

Note that a joker does not have a printed value.

Thus: 52 cards with printed values, 0-2 jokers.

I remember Jokers in the original game. Were they all the same, or were there some with variant game text? I feel like there were basic jokers and later they released some tricked-up jokers.

IIRC, all I ever had was a promo Joker included with Inquest magazine. He seemed to come up in a lot of lowball hands.

There was an alternate art Joker in an Inquest issue. There were also variant Jokers released as part of the game - Death's Head Joker aced a dude in a shootout and Fool's Joker only counted for pulls.
