Do the 2,5,8 pair all need to be of the same suit to get the credit?

Yes.

"The Pair is made of identical 2, 5, or 8 of any Suit Cards."

(italics mine)

Note that the combination is not "pair of 2s, 5s AND 8s", but "pair of 2s, 5s OR 8s" (you're not allowed to have more than one pair in your hand in any case in Mhing).

You get the points if the pair in your hand is 22, 55 or 88. The both cards in the pair must be of the same suit, of course, but the suit of the pair does not matter.

I see the "or" is very important. I read it as you needed six cards. Much clearer now that it just relates to your one pair!

Rules Review

Objective: To complete a “Standard Hand” of 14 cards consisting of four sets and a pair. A set can be a sequence of three numerical cards or a triplet of three identical cards. Sequences are called “Chows” and Triplets are called “Pungs”. A pair is called “Eyes”. The winning hand is scored and the first player to reach 500 points wins the game.

Non-Standard Hands: In addition, there is a hand that does not follow the “Standard Hand” pattern of four sets and a pair: Nothing Connects is when you have no Triplets, no Sequences and no Pairs and all cards in the same Suit are at least three digits apart. Please note: you can only claim a discard for this hand if it is to win and aside from flowers do not score for any other combinations.
