Idea is to decloak hit hard and cloak again ASAP so not to get hit.

Squad 1:
Echo
Navigator
Outmaneuver
Advanced cloaking device

Shadow squad pilot
Advanced cloaking device

Sigma squad pilot
Advanced cloaking device

Squad 2:
Whisper
Advanced cloaking device

Echo
Determination
Stygian particle accelerator

Shadow squad pilot
Advanced cloaking device.

What one you think would be better? I like squad 1 but Echo has lots of points.

Echo is so much better than Whisper. Give him the ACD no matter what because he can always maneuver to get his opponent in arc. If you want to cloak again asap, give the named pilots veteran instincts.

How is Echo better? I'm not criticizing, just honestly wondering. Because I had a blast last night playing the Phantom for the first time. My favorite was Whisper w/ACD, VI, Gunner, and Fire Control alongside a mini Howlrunner and AP swarm. My buddy called that "almost like cheating", and I had to agree. Whisper decloaks, shoots and gains target lock and probably a focus. If he misses, he shoots again with a target lock, then cloaks again. The APs do their thing, Howl does her thing, and it's lots of fun...for me.

As to the original post, 3 Phantoms looks pretty crazy fun any way you slice it, but I doubt would work well in a tournament due to the relative fragility of the ships. What I had to keep reminding myself of last night was that cloaked does not equal invulnerable. In fact, it's just one more die than your typical TIE. What is very cool is 4 attack dice at range 3 and 5 green dice when they shoot back thanks to the ACD. I like your second list as well, but I don't really get the Determination on Echo. If he loses his pilot ability, he still has the 2 barrel roll/boost, where as if Whisper loses his (hers?), he's lost that amazing extra focus as even more added protection. Then again, I haven't really tried Echo out much.

Echo is far better at maneuvering due to her curved decloaks, and the fact that her template can be placed facing either direction, doubling the number of ending orientations from Whisper (2 forward or 2 to either side turns into 2 forward right, 2 forward left, 2 left forward, 2 left rearward, 2 right forward, and 2 right rearward.) She can K-turn without K-turning, at an angle, ending right forward of where she was by decloaking with the template curved toward her front (forward) but at the back of her base, placing her base at the front of the template, then hard-turning speed 2 back toward where she was, and still get an action due to not being stressed.

I like Whisper. I get get PS9 which makes Whisper the top dog if I leave myself enough leftover points for initiative.

Put a recon specialist on there and you could end up with 3 focus while cloaked! Good luck getting through that.

That is if you somehow end up in someone's arc.

Whisper all day.

I've whisper + recon, ACD, Advanced sensors, and VI

Echo can stay out of arc all day long and can always maneuver to get in arc. You only need one focus if nobody can shoot you.

You will have several turns where Whisper's extra focus doesn't come into play (especially if you do your job and stay out of their arcs). Echo's ability will be used every turn.

As a rebel player, I would much rather see Whisper across the table than Echo. Unless I'm running turrets.

This game is more fun than, say, STAW because maneuvering is so much more important. Having 4x the maneuver options for barrel rolling is 4x the fun. I like fun, but I love to barrel roll!

These are my two quantitative and two qualitative reasons I think Echo kicks ass.

How about this list?

List: Fire Phantom
Sigma Squadron Pilot x3
Fire-Control System
Tactician
Advanced Cloaking Device

Idea is one attack to put stress token, target lock , then cloak.

6-9 damage in one round.
99 points and PS3 pilot to assure attack first.
Simple, reliable, and deadly.

I've never once used Whisper, though he does sound nice.
I've had great success running echo with Kath and either two academy pilots or just one name tie.
Echo is a beast. I've beaten a wide variety of lists with her
