Subject: Hoplite positioning for shock combat rss

In the below picture would the first 2 examples (starting from the left) be calculated the same in shock combat. (Athenians attacking). And would the last 2 also be calculated the same as each other?




Just wasn't sure if the positioning of the units in these situations would alter the combat.

Athenians HO 9 and 11 attacking single Elis HO so you will do 2 column shift in Athens HO favor,but Athens HO 9 must pivot and take 1CH then goes through additional TQ check following 6.43 - and then attack.So it is better to pivot before enemy unit becomes adjanced if possible.
In any other case,if enemy unit is in hex 5320 you will have to choose which half of HO unit will pivot to hex 5319.

Second example HO Atheny 12 is attacker but it must pivot first and do TQ check in order to attack HO Corinth 2 and vice versa.They are calculated without any advantage,so it is only HO against HO column.

I think where im getting confused is that I don't see in the rules where is says that both halves of the phalanx need to be in contact with the enemy to shock combat.

and 6.43 says "may" not must
