So you've gathered at the local watering hole, the choice pub for all you swarthy adventuring types. The real nickel is that the biggest baddest dungeon of death is just a short walk away. So naturally as the ale goes down the egos go up and before long you find yourself outside the entrance. Death waits behind that door but your not afraid, because you know you can take whatever challenge lies ahead with one arm tied behind your back...oh wait, that's what got you here in the first place...

This variant gives boasting a more dynamic role in the play of the game, while keeping the game play quick. Additionally, no extra components are needed.

Setup: Shuffle the Hero and Weapon decks and deal one combination face up, place the remained face down. Determine who will be the first player (anyway you like-a particularly nasty variant to our variant was to boast for first player and adding those penalties in addition to any later--but this is not for the feint of heart).

The first place may choose the face combination or receive the top card of each from the face down decks. If the face up combination is chosen, replace it from the top of the face down decks. Continue until all players have either chosen a random combination or the face up combination when their turn arrived.

Now you enter the Gauntlet...
Before revealing the encounter the boasting begins. Players (starting with the first) boast for the right to encounter the room. The player who's turn it is boasts first--or whimps out and doesn't boast. The next player must include the first boast and any additional. Once all players have passed (or a player makes all the boasts) the player with the biggest boast encounters the room (with all penalties in tact of course...).

If the player survives the room, they receive their reward and the next door is faced with the player who won the previous room beginning a new round of boasting for the right to encounter the next. (After each room, all boasts are reset).
If a character dies in the room, the next highest boaster encounters it and so on, until either someone passes the room or all players die.

The game ends when either (after an encounter) only one player remains alive to retreat back out, down some more swill, spend loot and likely begin the process all over again the next day or the "side passage" card is revealed (thus providing an exit to the dungeon) in either case, the player with the most gold (dead or alive) wins, so don't sandbag or your just a penniless coward at heart and no songs will be sung in the halls of Valhalla for you.
