Erik and I got together last Friday night to play War of the Ring. He took the role of Sauron while I controlled the Free People and the Fellowship.

The Fellowship got off to a good start, getting to Lorien with only minor difficulties. However, things weren’t all peaches and cream for the Free Peoples, an army of Urak Hai and Warg Riders issuing out of Orthanc attacked Helms Deep, quickly besieging, then defeating the army there. Meanwhile the goblins poured out of Moria (possibly annoyed at not capturing the Fellowship) and Lorien was under siege, lead by three Nazgul. Picking up the trail of the Fellowship the dark forces began hunting them down, mean while, an army of orcs with a Nazgul captain started towards Minas Tirith. As well as this dark news, Saruman the White revealed himself Saruman the many coloured, a servant of the Dark Lord Sauron.

Seeing things were about to turn to darkness, Aragorn and Borimir rushed off to Minas Tirith where Aragorn was crowned King. And a large army was assembled to defend the white walls. Meanwhile, Gandalf left the Fellowship to find Treebeard in the Fangorn Forest. He found him there, revealed himself as Gandalf the White, and sent an army of Ents down to destroy an undefended Orthanc, killing Saruman. In the confusion, the Fellowship managed to sneak through to Minas Tirith with only a small scare from a searching Nazgul.

The army that had set out to destroy Minas Tirith turned aside for an easier target, taking an almost undefended Pelagir. However, things were looking bad for the dark forces of Sauron. Theoden rode an army from Edoras to take on the Urak Hai camped out at Helms Deep, Aragorn marched to the black gate to issue the challenge to Sauron ,a small Rohan force took an empty Isengard and an army from Dale pressed on to harass Dol Guldur.

Sauron’s response to this was to man up Minas Morgul and the black gate, sending the Witch King to lead the armies, however it was too late, the Fellowship had made it to Mordor (made up of Frodo and Sam, Legolas, Gimli, Merry and Pippin).

Perhaps, a smaller group would have made it through unnoticed, as it was Legolas, Gimli and Pippin all fell on the road through the planes of Gorgoroth to Mount Doom. There at the end, with the help of his two friends from the shire Merry and Sam, Frodo threw the ring into the fires, destroying it, and freeing the world from the treachery of Sauron.

Congratulations on your first completed game! It sounds like it was a rough road for Sauron, all right - losing Saruman is rarely fun.

Cheers,
Merric
