crator of this awesome geeklist:

Homemade games are OK ! (as long as you bring something new)

where he demonstrates a whole new level of geekiness.

Without further ado I'm giving you his introduction:

Quote:
Greetings to all you fellowgeeks around here!

My name is Jean-Marc, I am in my late 40s, and I am still a hard core gamer.

I think that the first boardgame my father taught me must have been draughts. I still have deep respect for draughts, but I never practised it as much as I wanted to, because I hardly could find any fellow gamer to share my appetite, a curse that has been following me during all my gaming life...
When I was about 7, my father introduced me to chess... I still remember everything about the magic of these very minutes that influenced my whole life, from the glossy shaped details from the magnetic piecesn to the red carpet and the deep silence of the hotel room where the scene occured. He gave me the scholar's mate, and I begged "again! again!" , so he mate me again the same way, and i asked "again! again!"...No surprise he quickly got tired of it.

Unfortunately, my older brother was not found of games, worse for my mother, and the other members of my family yet to be born (anyway and to my knowledge, they have no taste for gaming either). Moreover I have been living most of my life in the french west indies, where the only popular games are outdoor games with very few exceptions for dominoes, belote, and to some extend for scrabble. You can hardly see anything else tapping the tables on the beaches or under the mangoe tree during our hot sunday afternoons.

Those exceptions put apart and according to a vast majority of my fellow citizens, gamers should fa,ll into one of those two categories: children and drunkers...I have often noticed from the look they gave me that the people I try to introduce to the world of modern boardgaming put more thinking into deciding into which category to put me, rather than actually trying to figuring out the meaning of the rules I describe.

In the lack of any human opponent,I had no choice to investigate the world of gaming than to dive into books. My first two chess books were both entitled:"les échecs" (one was by Camil Seneca, the other by Fritz Van Seters)... But i reckon that my deepest influence for my gaming life to come was rooting from some other
books about mathematical pastimes that were standing into my father's library : Sam Loyd, Martin Gardner, and more than all Edouard Lucas fed one of my teenage summer with delightfull lectures...
During the early 80s, I another eye-opener has been the magazine "Jeux & Stratégie", to my opinion the best magazine ever about boardgaming.
Even today, every time i re-read my old mags, I am delighted by the deepness the communicative passion, the high quality of their contents. Yea, I know this probably just means that I'm getting old, but it's nice to have some compensation, is not it ?

From those lines above, it may not sound as a surprise that I followed studies in math, or that I devoted most of my gaming career to chess. My love story with the so called "game of kings" came to an end soon after I experienced some kind of a blast with my discover Trioker (every detail related into a separate thread), that turned me away from the religion of chess and opened wide the endless fields of imagination, construction, harmony... board designing !

Though I have yet to share most of my creations here, I have accomplished through the last 20 years about a dozen of games of my own. Most of my games are abstract based (in the "Hey that's my fish" sense), but with a little drop of randomness. My favorite creations are those with very few material, easy to grab rules, yet a lot of complexity left for strategical or tactical developments...
In the process of building games, I discovered that there was some accomplishment in itself within the process of figuring out the best materials and the best theme to breathe life into the story related by the game. In this regard, my highest satisfaction comes when I happen to find some kind of "ready made" about to be thrown to the trash can but fitting completely my purposes.

This turned out to become a hobby of its own, and I have now dozens of boxes filled with stuff "things to be possibly used" (or in short: "used things"), especially those little toys found in kinder chocolate eggs (see my avatar).
Not only I use this stuff for my own creations, but I also love to redesign a lot of existing games with them (maybe should I add that for the most part,I do owne the original box of the game I choose rebuild)... Most of my homemade creations are listed into a geeklist to which I owe the honor of meeting quite a few from the fantastic human beings who stray on BGG... Among them, Kai Bettzieche who gave me a lot of words of support and even gave me the opportunity to become GOTW, to my great honor and surprise!

frumpish wrote:

I think it really depends upon what part of me is involved:
My brain favors truth,
My emotions favor beauty,
But when it comes down to games, they usually both work together

Looking at the sunset upon the ocean is one of my greatest accomplishments, especially those days when our red tree blazing are bloosoming.

Kattvippa wrote:

C What's the farthest place you've ever traveled to?

I think the longest distance from Guadeloupe that I have travelled so far was during our to Germany about 16 years ago (on the steps of my favorite classic composer, JS Bach).
May sound weird to our german geeks fellows, but that was a very exotic place for us...

Kattvippa wrote:

D If money (or nothing else for that matter) would be no object, where would you travel to?

There are a lot of candidates I would find hard to choose from
- Costa Rica for taking photos of insects and nature
- Korea for a very different experience with a chance to play korean chess
- Mali for this was my native country but I never went back as an adult (not the best period for that plan nowadays...)

Kattvippa wrote:

E If you could go back in time and meet any one person you'd like to, who'd you meet and why?

- That would probably be Marc Odier, the author of "Trioker" (refer to this thread for more explanations)

Kattvippa wrote:

F Your favourite pizza toppings?

caper, i think.

Kattvippa wrote:

G If you were a song, which song would you be?

Tough one... Maybe "The part you throw away", by Tom waits

Kattvippa wrote:

H What's the weirdest food you actually happen to love?

Sweet condensed milk with added sugar.

Kattvippa wrote:

I What was the last book you read? Did you enjoy it?

If comics counts, it was the Manu Larcenet's "Blast", fourth of the series. One of the strongest comics I have ever read.

Otherwise, I read a lot of stuff simulteanously: one book about photoshop, another about html5, and Lola Lafon's novel "la petite communiste qui ne souriait jamais"... I won't say it's a bad book, but i may not be in the mood for it.

Kattvippa wrote:

J What was the last film you saw? Would you recommend it?

I recently watched Zhang-ke's "A touch of sin", and certainly would reccommend it. Be warned that there is quite some violence scenes.

Kattvippa wrote:

I wish i had someone to play with to celebrate the event soblue
I'm afraid I will have to keep on with my on line playing routine ...

Congratulations.
Your DYI and your list on abstract puzzle are among my favorite things on BGG.

Some questions:

1) The french west indies are quite a particular place. Do you know any other member of BGG there ? Are there any local games that were totally unknown to you before going there ?

2) What are your favorites in Callois classification ?
2a) Agon, Alea, Mimicry or Ilinx ?
2b) Ludus or Paidia ?

3) How important is component quality in your enjoyment of a game ? Any game for which the "form" is more important than the "substance" ?
